I did once, and it was boring, but I understand a lot of people do prefer Earth.
One feature I like in civ is the exploration, the surprise, the unknown islands, mysterious countries, lands of plenty...
What is the reason for preferring earth?

With an earth map,you can rewrite history, for example having your roman empire standing the tst of time

On Earth, you can select your challenge. If you want a private continent, there's North America for you. If you want a small island, enjoy England. To be boxed in on a peninsula, France and Germany are there. And then there's the rest of "Eurasia."

Having said that, I usually play a random map.

I like the real world map. I often play it because then I know I get a good map, and I can choose what kind of game I want (being isolated in America, being haunted in the Middle East, being trapped in Europe or being in the outskirts of a crowded world in Africa or East Asia).

I like the large continents in the real world. That makes serious AI invasions more likely if I start in Europe/Africa/Asia. The AI is far better at fighting at its own continent than overseas:). Large continents also make my own logistics easier. Playing the real world also add to the historical feeling:p.

Of course the real world map has its drawbacks too. Then I know how the world looks like without exploring and I know where the AI starts. (But that information could be handy when the Americans suddenly launches their spaceship a few turns too early:rolleyes: ). Some wonders do also become a little more powerful than they need to be in the large real world continents.

I play fantasy maps too, but I guess I prefer the real world:lol:.

I almost never play(ed) on the World map. I like it better if I'm on a world of which I have no idea how it looks like or where the AI are. That adds excitement and surprises to the game.
And with the world map, I do know of course what the world looks like and where the AI are, which makes the game too easy and a little bit boring. That said, I have recently played a world map game for the first time in 6 years or so. I was the English and just obliged myself not to expand in areas where the English didn't go in real history. That made it somewhat more challenging, but it was still less fun than a random map.

I used to play the earth map a lot but it soon became too easy so I switched to random maps.
I kinda liked the idea of "changing" history but the foreknowledge of the map made the game so much easier after a few tries...

I like to play both...but I prefer Earth... because it is Historically correct. And it's very nice to know were to find enemies. Sometimes I spend quite some time looking for Germans. But in Earth, I just visit Europe (if I'm not European), and then go to Germany. It is as simple as that.

earth has got too much deserts and artic places, and you know were the enemy is.

Exactly... that's what makes it realistic! Would you believe that modern day USA wouldn't know where to find the German? Well... I just like the realism in it. And the arctic places? Well...then don't find a base on the poles. And the deserts could proove usefull if you push your enemy into it.

and why do you hate deserts? because of low resources. Drive the enemy into it and it's curtains.

Why is it a really easy game if you choose china on the earth map??

Yep. There's lots of fertile land around you and enemies are very far away. The first you will encounter are the Indians or the Mongols. So you'll have a great opportunity to expand real fast before you have to start thinking about warfare. :)
