Who should I fight?

I'm playing an Emperor level game on a tiny archipelago map as the Scandinavians. :viking: I just finished pushing the Arabs off my biggest island, but I'm behind in tech to the Spanish and the Dutch. I'll finish researching Invention in another 12 turns, which will give me berserkers. The Dutch have the most territory, are at war with Spain, and are starting to pull way ahead in technology. I've been planning to attack the Dutch once I have a good supply of berserkers to harass them with and maybe steal some wonders. Now, however, Spain has just completed The Great Library. So I'm wondering if I should attack them instead to take the Library and catch up in techs. I've been trading nicely with Isabella, getting ivory for silk, and I'd like to help them against the Dutch, but Spain is an easier target and I want that Library. What would you do?

I would definately go for the library but don't leave the Dutch alone for too long. I think the GL is one of the best wonders as you can turn science to zero and rake in $$

Take the city with the GL turn your science to zero and get some dosh. But declare war on Dutch and have a long war, prevent them from coming to big at all costs.

Tough. Tough.
Defeat Spain.
Do deals with the dutch to get as much as you can off them. Secure your forces, and get the dutch.
Get some of the Others to help you out.

Or, stop the Dutch from Growing.
If Dutch and Spain are at War, and you go to war with Spain, Dutch get more offa Spain, making them harder to defeat.
After you kill the Dutch(with the help of Spain and friends) go immediatly after Spain.

Give us a Screenie

Just started my war with Spain, sorry Isabella. Sent 11 galleys with 22 berserkers to Madrid. Defeated its 3 riflemen and 3 musketmen, captured the GL, Pyramids & Copernicus. GL netted me 13 techs! Also triggered my golden age. Spain has several more wonders that I'm coveting, so I'm hoping to make quick work of them and ride the wave of my golden age over Spain and onto the Dutch. The Dutch made peace with Spain while I was preparing for war, so they're on the sidelines at the moment, and the Arabs have one city on a tundra island. Spain has Temple of Zeus and Knights Templar, so it's going to be very bloody. But I figure even if I lose Madrid I've already got what I came for. If the war goes badly I'll make peace and finally go after the Dutch.

Got any screenies?

Sorry, no. :( I play at home and visit the forum at work (where I wish I wasn't on a Saturday). I've never posted a screenie, but I'll see if I can when I get home.

I'd have gone for the Dutch. The Bezerker is a powerful attacking unit, large numbers of 'em will cut down those Swiss Mercenaries without too much bother. Best not to waste it on the Spanish, who could have been destroyed later at a time when their Crusaders and Ancient Cav would have been weak compared to new, more advanced units you'd developed.

Thing with the Great Library, it would only be worth it if there are two Civs who are getting a runaway tech lead. Also, given that you've just got Invention, it won't be long before the Great Library is obselete. :(

Still, all fighting is good!:D Just make sure you mush them Spaniards proper.

didn't you hear?
he said Spain had Rifleman, and Dutch were leading in techs.
I think it was a good decision to go for the Great Library.. :)

Alright, make screenie at home (prt screen, paste)
Send it in emil to your self,or me :p , or somebody else with a imaging program besides paint.
Then, we give it to yuo, you post it here.

Thanks, I should have known better. Are you an English major?

Nope. I just don't know enough to add much to these forums, so I thought I could try to make myself useful in SOME way! :)

Best wishes,

Only less you're really bad off in the science race, I'd probably go for the Dutch. If one AI starts to run away, they can become a royal pain in the bodily waste disposal area.

You were right. I was not happy with my war on Spain. Sure I got loads of tech. with the GL, but my berserkers got pinned down in Madrid, I was only slowly making progress, and I could see that I had made several tactical errors. So I decided to see what would have happened if I'd gone after the Dutch instead. Much better! They had easier targets closer to home, and I didn't have to wait nearly as long to prepare my forces. In 20 turns I've taken 9 of their cities, and Spain has taken 2. I'm still behind in techs, but not 13, and I've springboarded past the Dutch in size. I'm catching up to Spain in technology and plan to squeeze a few techs out of the Dutch before I'm done with him. And: I have more luxuries!

LLXerxes: still trying to make screenies. Nothing happened when I pressed <Print Screen>. I thought I'd get a dialogue box. Maybe I don't have the right software.

@ Zandrew No, you won't get a dialogue box. After you hit Print Screen, you just have to open Paint or Word or like program and then paste the image.

So, is it stored in a buffer, so that when I open Paint or Word I can press <paste> right away and it will appear? Or do I need to open it first somehow?

Yes, I did 'hear'. ;) But the benefits of the Great Library would only be minor at the stage of the game that all Civs had reached. It would be obselete very quickly and the Dutch would not have been slowed one iota.

Anyway, I am totally vindicated by Zandrew's report of what happened when he attacked the Dutch instead. :p ;)

Paste immediately. I'm sure it will work in other programs, but those are the two I use most.
