Who's your favourite Civ?

I used to like a lot of civs but now it's only Egypt. I find it easier to succeed on higher levels as industrious is SOOO useful (best trait in my opinion) and religious for when you expand and your empire is massive you don't want a 50 turn anarchy to hinder production.

Sorry, but Indians don't belong in the top 10 of any (civ related) list. They are extremely mediocore. The above list is kind of flawed.

The most fun and best war monger civ I have ever played was the Indians. Their UU rocks! and a war elephant army is simply unkillable into the Industrial Age. Commercial means ample funds for war and low corruption for big sprawling empires. Religious means cheap temples to help quickly expand your frontier and to quickly pacify captured towns, nice "happiness" imporvements and wonders to help manage war weariness, and quick government changes allow for rapid shifts from war mongering to building.

To the point of the question, I have found the Americans good, although I have not yet played them in C3C with the weakened Industrious. I do like the Germans and the Persians, although I prefer to have my Golden Age in the early Medieval rather than Ancient era. (Yes, I know, neither Germany or America supports this . . .). China is always a good choice, although I tend to switch off culturally linked starting postions when I do because being sandwiched between Japan and the Mongols just sucks. I have never played the Celts, although I think the IA plays them very poorly. I played the Mayans once and quit early because it was too easy. I generally play random once I am well established at a level, switching to my standards (China or Persia) when I move up.

Agricultural is the strongest trait in the game. Simply overpowered!
So any agricultural civ will do just fine for me, with the Iroquois, Mayans and Sumerians as front runners, 'cause they also have my next favourite traits (commercial, industrious and scientific).

For the non-agricultural civs. Anything with a fast UU is nice, especially China and the Ottomans 'cause they also have nice traits. Like Japan too...

I love everything militaristic. Cheap barracks, harbors etc + usually around 60-80 MGLs per game says enough. Each conscript unit actually can become veteran and fully usefull in no time. My fav civ was Japan, because UU - Samurai just rock, u get well timed GA. But since I realized I dont need culture and I switch govermnets only once or twice per game, Religious just lost its fashion. Now for me greatest combos are Germany and VIking, especially second one, bcs they have Alphabet and UU appears just in time when I need my GA. I do think many ppl underestimate militaristic trait, bcs they either dont like wars or afraid to lose shields in military units. They paid their price many times, conquering land and cities. In my last game I got 4 fully developed cities(including courthouse, policestation, factory and power plant) from neighbor(and others full with usefull stuff also) - they had everything, except of course culture buildings. I like when someone builds for me :)

@ Bagatur- Man I love those :viking: too. Beserkers are perfectly timed and
:spank: butt! Do the AIs even attempt to attack your armies? :scan:
I usually play on Emperor and find the only problem I have with Vikings and
Germans is growth early :( , If I don't look out the AIs try to pick on me
early  ----- I usually cave and put them on my "list" for later revenge.

@dgfred: Yes, AI do attacks armies, but in certain cases - when in just conquered city, army is heavily wounded and weakened and third case, when AI has big chance to kill the army, even if its healty. Case one is clear, case two - 38 incan cavalries attacked my two Cavalry armies and one Samurai army in city I just got, with rushed wall on hill. All Incan cavs fell down, I lost one cavalry army and other two had only 1 hit point left:)) Lucky I. Third case, I just posted this today in other thread, sorry for repetition - I got two horseman armies(4 units, all Elite*s) killed by single Longbow, on open grassland.

P.S. Next game I'll try China, for sure. They look great. Just this pink color and almost impossible to memorize city names :)

My top five...
5: Dutch. The two new traits, but I like them. Good UU to defend stuff, no need to upgrade to or build Musketmen (more expensive to build Musketmen.)
4: Sumeria. Good traits, especially on a very arid map. Just try not to get into an early war until you're out of Despotism. Republic slingshot is helpful there.
3: Persia. Racing to Iron Working and rushing the AI with Immortals is what I like to do. Nice to get out of Despotism first, of course.
2: Babylon. Whether it is culture or space race, Babylon is excellent for peaceful building. Great civ.
1: Scandinavia. I never seem to grow very quickly with them, but that's fine by me. They're perfect for warmongering, particularly on Archipelago and even Continents maps. Berserks can even destroy Riflemen pretty easily and can get those one-tile islands if necessary.
Also like others like Greece and the Ottomans.

I love the Carthaginians..... They suit my style of play- naval power/money maker. (and on Monarch or lower, no-one takes my cities)

I admire the Egyptians (my friend has taught me many lessons with them)

The German Panzer is good enough reason for me to like the Germs....

And I like the English due my own background, and because i always played as them in Civ II

But, i will not argue with those who decry my choices, because i think every civ is perfectly suited to someone, while being usless to others.... :crazyeye:

Sadly, I am a bit low level (regent), but I find the Americans to great in getting off to a flyer and staying in front. I *love* cracking goody huts. Pity about the UU tho. I often find that by the end of the expansion phase I have isolated cities scattered about everywhere, with every empire known to man scattered in between. Lots of fun trying to link it all up. I am to scared to try higher levels due to my aversion to micromanagement.

ps chinese are good too :)

1st Iroquois : Agricultural + great UU -> UU upgraded into Chivalry allows very long war.
2nd Sumerian : Agricultural + great UU ! -> Can't loose a city even at high level in Anciant age.

Byzantines, Greeks, Persia, Egypt, England, Sumeria. No particular rank.

@ trooper- What, No Vikings? :crazyeye: I've only played Persia, Egypt and
Greeks out of your list, and only for a partial game  . Give Celts a try,
I think you'll like the early UU, you can hold off your Golden Age if needed.
Agric and Rel is nasty together  .

No Vikings dgfred ;)
I have tried Celts a few times on tiny map war-only games. I think their UU is overpowered (the speed that is). I agree that their traits are very good! In builder games - GA comes with the Pyramids and that is bad!

Trying the Babylonians (Monarch)....... Going ok..... But lost my first Vet Bowman attacking Barb warrior.... (not even a scratch on the barb) (plain old reg warrior killed him straight after :crazyeye: )

Miss my fast workers..... But for first time i'm a culture king early on.... and i'm sure the free advance next era will serve me well.......

Will these guys replace my beloved Carthies? Will my Avatar be a Bowman? stay tuned...... :D

The Egyptians and Germans were my favourite civs in Vanilla civ. Industrious Relious rocks! Fast workers plus cheap temples, and their War Chariot is way too valuable! I liked the Germans because of they have the most lovely UU of anyone, and Military Scientific isn't too bad!! Quick promotions and free techs are cool!

Now I think the Germans are now stronger in Conquests but poor Egyptians... both of Egypt's traits were toned down. =(

I like Religious civs: Celts (if they start near a river they will outgrow other civs), Japanese (cheap temples and barracks = early expansion) and Indians (less corruption, closer to Philosophy). All of them have nice UU's. I also had good results with Arabs, Sumerians, Mayans and Russians.

Best regards,

Slawomir Stachniewicz.

Arabia: Fast starters, murderous UU.
Byzantines: Not the best, but a very interesting style of play
Celts: Strong in almost every category
Vikings: Actually kind of crappy, but Beserkers are FUN!
