Im playing as the Egyptians (YELLOW) its 1000AD.After a short, decisive war against the Shalenkans (Chinese) in 300BC (wiping them out in under 20 turns) my attentions are drawn to a small island covered in resources.I sail out and settle there....as do the French (PINK). A small battle ensues in 10AD and then we kiss and make up. Since the begging of the game all the other civs are either Angry or Furious with me! WHY???! I often give them maps and gold as gifts to cheer em up but its not working! Then every so often ill get a blunt demand "give me xxx or else!" and if i decline war is declared! I decline as pride gets the better of me and i know they live in far off continents so no real fighting takes place. The fact that ALL the other 8 civs are angry makes trading a nightmare and means i can never get any extra gold thus science spending starts to slip. At the moment im 4th out of the 9 civs in total and just want some friendly civs! I have embassies in half of the civs but at the moment cant afford the rest. Anybody have any advice or help?!!!

Something that pisses the AI civs off is if you don't declare a war properly. To do this, you must not have any ongoing trades with the othe civ, and you must not have any units inside the enemy border.
Maybe you failed to declare the wars against China or France this way?

Also, you must regularly trade with all enemy civs to keep them happy with you.

I ran into the same sort of general situation as you, thomson_2001. I learned my lesson not to do that again. If you are gonna declare war, make them do it. Otherwise, they just itch for a fight. :(

i tried to make em declare on me . The chinese are so stubborn and wouldnt do it. The french declared war on me shorly after our first short war had ended. I think both times that i declared I was probably inside enemy territory as the message "move your troops out" came up and i simply declared war. Ive never noticed this type of worldwide anger in any of my other games ive played though!

Neither have I. The exact same thing happened to me regarding the chinese, only it was the egyptians, who were border-pushing me . So I declared war on them, took 10 of their cities (razing 4)... they only had 4 cities on other continents... stayed furious with me the whole game, but talked to me. I guess I was trading with them at the time. Talk about grudges...

I think the AI goes through a time where it's just generally angry. I guess they don't get good enough benifits or something and if I could, I'd give'em the medical coverage they must want.

When they seem pissy I just fight'em the whole game and the next game they're nice agian.

Or maybe they are going through the change of life or something. Sheeze, it drives me nuts when they are not consistent sometimes. They get mad, then they are so nice... then they wanna chop your head off the next turn. Sigh... The game isn't supposed to reflect real life, is it? (apologies to the ladies out there).

they are too strong at the moment. The top 6 civs all have lots of gold and stronger millitary than me. They are also a few techs ahead of me. Im spending like crazy to have a modern ,powerful millitary! There still arent any good ships yet (i altered the game so techs too longer to research). I think im gonna have to fight the Athelonicans (greeks LIGHT GREEN) so i have a larger empire - more gold - more production and a whole island to myself. Then ill take down the b*st*rds!!! mooohahahaaha well apart from the Aztecs - there a little to hardcore for me! (they r 4th at the moment but have a strong millitary and have taken over loads of babylonian cities. ill leave them till last methinks!

lol. We you guys have any alternate suggestions? I was thinking i could hold back on the war and offensive knights and build universities (thus increase my science). But somehow the thought of war is too tempting
just hope i have enough knights. At the moment i have 10 knight outside of cities to go into Athlonica and about 8 musketmen...im gonna have to build up more troops methinks

Yeah, hold off the war- you are not ready. You should have at least 3 strike groups, concentrating in two directions- preferably opposite each other. That prevents the AI from reinforcing heavily in one direction, gives you a better chance of winning the war. Build up your military and science rate too, about half and half. I'd wait 30 years if you can.

Try getting some of the other civs in a mutual defense agreement if you can, perhaps a military agreement to attack someone. Create some confusion, then jump on them. Do that after you get your military up. You ain't gonna last long with that kind of force. :(

Ive had 3 groups made up for a while.
Group A consists of 8knight and 4 musketmen.THey will atachk the land to the north - the main force

Group B (will eventually) consist of 7 knights and 5 musketmen and will attack the citiesto the West of my territory

Group D (stands for distraction) consists of 2 galleys with 2 musketmen one knigh and a settler. This group will land in northern enemy teritory and settle on their land. This city will undergo continuos attack allowing group A to attck the south with less troops to worry about. Even if the grou D city falls to the opponent by this time i will have captured 4 or 5 of their cities.also this citi will be a hinderence to them as it will take some tiles away from a neighbouring city!

Whatcha think...alll i need is 2 more knight in group A and B and im off!

heres a map

It's a good plan- just remember, no plan survives contact with the enemy. A reserve force of about 4 or 5 knights might be wise for reinforcing A or B as needed.

Perhaps, if you have the time and resources, a group called D2 for landing near Morse, opposite B would help... but I think it just might be better to add to B.

Your plan looks good.

Whoa! Do you always map out your attacks on paper before you proceed? If so, when PTW comes out I'm not playin you, you're too organized....

It's usually wise to at least have a preliminary plan in your head, if not on paper, with sufficient flexibility to change in a hurry. Tompson shows some good tac sense, which will be necessary in PTW multiplayer. Unorganized attacks rarely succeed. :p

I have the floor covered with maps as I type this (no im not sad, i just enjoy it more when there seems to be more depth). I usually draw out each continent marking importand cities and resources. If i got to battle i draw up 3 plans: Attack A, Attack B and Defend

Atack A:- One possible attack plan, usually the best (the one you see above)
Attack B:-Another possible plan.To use is something goes wrong early on.
Defend:- A map of which units will patrol which areas (by patrol i mean constant movement between 4 squares). This plan is to be used if i am overwelmed and need to retreat.

These maps are drawn in detail with terrain types, all cities and resources.Normally an A4 sheet represents 16 squares by 24 squares.

I only make quick drawings (cos itd be too boring if took ages) and consult them and the ingame graphics.
BTW im playing on Deity and ill look forward too kicking your ass when "play the world" comes out.lol

Here is my plan B map. A attacks Northwards and then turns and attacks southwards.By this time C will have crossed the sea by a row of galleys (so troops move from one to the next to the next). These galleys are also in the defence/retreat plans as a means of quick escape. Group B will split taking the smaller Athelonian Western towns. :)
