It's stupid. I'm trying to attack their city and then several chariots just appear in one of my cities. For them to move that far in one go they would have to have been right next to my attacking forces so why can't I see them? Does the computer just decide to cheat and place them there or something?!
There's no such AI cheat. If you provide a savegame we may be able tell you what exactly happened. Possibilities are:
- The chariots could move faster as you expected (e.g. woodsman promotions, although I'm not sure chariots can get those)
- The chariots made use (via Open Borders treaty) of a road of a third civ bordering your city.
- The chariots were teleported out of another civ's territory after cancellation of an open border treaty, and unfortunately happened to land near your city.
- The chariots where there but you overlooked them
- You ran into a bug
Maybe they landed from seaside or something like this ? Because that happens to me too that I don't notice when a enemy ship lands units in my empire and a notice them first when they attack one of my cities one turn later - I don't know why exactly but events like that where more obvious in previous civ versions ...
You see the enemy units moving (if you checked the respective option), nd when an enemy closes in on you, you get a log message like "The enemy has been spottet near [city name]". It's even in red color to signal danger.
Perhaps the messages aren't triggered by naval transports which are too far away from your territory, although they may be able to land an invasion force in one turn?

The problem with that is it goes to soon away if too many events happen at the same time and thats usually the case if there is a large scale war - especially if you look on the screen because a lot of things happens there too during enemy movment phase. In previous version they showed how the units moved from ship to land - ( they don't do this now even with show enemy moves activated ) somehow I notice this better

I was at war with them and then 3 groups of chariots went into my city which was closest to theirs. A few squares ahead of that were my soliders, at the edge of their capital. I managed to fend them off after they destroyed a few farms but I should've been able to see them initially. They couldn't have arrived from the sea and I couldn't have overlooked them because I was telling the soldiers what to do, I would've noticed any chariots, the only things in the city were some longbowmen. There are no railroads yet.
Without screenshots there is very little anyone can say here, as descriptions simply aren't specific enough for us to tell what's happening. The AI cannot simply cheat in this fashion. There is some evidence that a bug means units can occasionally be moved into enemy territory when open borders with a third party civ is cancelled, but this doesn't sound like the issue here.
I would say most likely you didn't notice the chariots (I've done this often enough) or you weren't allowing for how far they can move in one turn. Contrary to what some people think the AI is not a living thing with a grudge against you and it cannot change the rules of the game when it feels like it. It is therefore illogical to talk about it "cheating". There have been a couple of bugs (map knowledge) that do benefit the AI and not humans, but even they cannot be regarded as cheats. By the sounds of it there isn't a third party civ involved, so I can confidently say that whatever happened was soundly within the rules of the game. A "cheat" to teleport AI units would have to have been deliberately and blatantly programmed in.
The other issue is graphics problems. Are you suffering from glitches? I've seen the odd report of units becoming invisible, though I've never come across the problem myself.
I believe that MRM is right about the ship to land movement.
The Ruskies sent an armada to Philadelphia, I thought I killed them all but one got through. The next thing I know there are bunch of enemy units on Philadelphia's doorstep. I had enemy movement on but never saw them leave the ship. I do not recall if I got the enemy is next to Philadelphia message or not. I was too busy freaking out and screaming orders to units in Boston and New York to go save Philadelphia. (Yes, I will scream orders at my computer in those tense times, and I am willing to bet that I am not the only one to do this while playing this Game!)
I thought at the time that I just missed seeing the enemy movement since during a war the images flash by pretty quickly. Hopefully they can fix this.
