Why can't I spread my religion?

I have just founded christianity as a religion, and therefore
to spread the religion to the world, I started to build missionaries, and
put them on a caravel.
Went to the other end of the world and unloaded the missionary and went to the nearest town. There I was not allowed to spread christianity????

Why is that? You can't spread religion to other civilizations? Is there a restriction on how far you can spread it??

In that case I think it is a stupid rule. Missionaries spread their religion all over the world. From the darkest of Africa to Japan. So why is it not allowed in the game??? Or is there some other fault??

Is the civ you're trying to spread it to using the theocracy civic? If they are that rules out the spread of any non state religion.

No. The Civ I am trying to spread it to does not have any religion at all, aka no religious base civic.
Well, before warlords 2.08 patch, it's possible that AI adopts a religious civic even he has no religion.
Please contact him again to make sure.:)

Did it fail to spread the religion, or did it not give you the option to try to spread it?

Either your at war and somehow you put your missionary on an undefended city, or much more likely that your opponent has adopted theocracy which prevents the spreading of all non state religions. It is likely that by the time you hit theology some sort of religion had spread to that opponent and they've adopted a religion making theology useful. Just double check to make sure the computer isn't just being a ******.

Were you truly "not allowed", i.e. the spread-religion action icon was not present, or was that icon greyed out ? In the latter case, I think that mousing over the icon would bring up a reason. Or did your Missionary simply fail to spread Christianity and vanish in a puff of incense ? That does happen.

No! My opponent does not have any religion, therefore cannot adopt theocracy.
Although perhaps he has adopted it anyway?? He is new at civ4 and perhaps he is trying it out a bit. We have open borders agreement, are not at war, and the missionary I have in his city, has the option spread religion greyed out.

I will check with him regarding my first suggestion though....

You can see if he's adopted Theocracy by looking at the game log.

In fact, can you give us a copy of your game log for the turn in question and a few before it?

Possibilities:
(1) If possible, give the friendly community your save game, so we can help
(2) Or the game log, like AThousandYoung said
(3) Or go away, because you lost me there :p

Well, you can see your opponent's religious civic in the red circle.
PLEASE MAKE SURE. :)

Yes, he can.... At least in Vanilla. I know it's stupid, but ...

Slam dunk - the Civ is under Theocracy. (and no, they don't need a religion to adopt that civic)

It might not make sense, but its effects will kick in the moment the civ gets a religion without then having to go into anarchy to change civics. Doing it earlier just gets the anarchy out of the way for no real loss.

Quite true. I took a closer look and he had adopted to theocracy, without having any religion at all. Convinced him to switch out of it, and gave him the holy word.....pax vobiscum!!!

Thanks guys for your help

I started to suspect that you had to have a trade route or something to spread religion, not that he had adopted religionless theocracy
