This game is great, im already addicted. I have one complaint though. Why did they get rid of advisors from civ3? They were cool especially the science advisor who said stuff on the tech tree when you clicked on a researchable technology. Diplomacy is a lot more boring now without the foriegn advisor to.

Do you remember the advisors from the original civ 2? Those were the best feature this series ever had. It was a interactive feature where the advisors talked and argued with eachother when giving advise to you. Above all else i would love to see that back or just the advisors from civ 3. Looking at the normal advisor menu honestly sucks in civ4. There is no figure head and its plain boring.

Can someone make a mod for this?

"We are rich, sire!! Rich! Rich! Rich!"

Completely agree. Without them, I feel much more like I am running a program. I don't get quite the feeling that I am a king/dictator when my "advisors" are spreadsheets.

Couldn't agree more! Loved Civ2's advisors and the ones in Civ3 still gave the government personality. I really miss my Domestic and science advisors!

I guess I'm the only one that found them annoying. :)

"Build more walls!!"

I thought it was quite humerous when they said stupid things in civ2

- Im off to play with my abacus!

Elvis ( the entertainment advisor ) in civ 2 was so hilarious along with the science advisor who said the above quote

I like it in ancient times when the military advisor says

- Build more ships! So we may destroy our enemies ships and paint the oceans red with blood!

They were very funny. I would just bring them in from time to time for a laugh. My favorites are:

When the military advisor (Medieval times) would get hammered, sing and promptly stumble off screen.

Also, the Trade Advisor, I believe, would imply that you were having relations with the female Foreign Advisor. Classic.

Although it is true they could get repetitive and annoying at times, I do wish at I could use them again for comic relief. Especially during those long years when all your cities and units are busy and you are simply in turn . . . turn . . . turn mode.

Yes, advisors are the history of Civ. THey are almost useless in Civ IV.

Advisors belong to those lovable niceties Firaxis got rid of (in exchange for sterile, so-called "wonder movies"). Granted, the CIV2 advisors DID get repetitive (but funny, nonetheless) after a while - but wouldn't it be an idea to have advisors which every so often give you pieces of information you normally don't bother to find out or even CAN'T know?

Examples:

- A trade advisor could hint at "rumors" that a certain resource (which might even be invisible to you because of lacking the necessary tech) "is said" to be found in a certain area: "Sire, rumors have it that some material called 'aluminium' has been found in this area (zoom to area on map). Who knows what it might be good for?"

- A military advisor could give vague assessments of random border enemy cities (like a weak version of a spy): "Sire, according to my informant, there is only a weak garrison of archers stationed in Munich - shouldn't we have a go at it?"

- A science advisor could give you hints when one of your opponents is short before a technological breakthrough (like "English scientists are rumored to work on a concept called 'Liberalism', Sire!")

And, and, and...

I would go beyond just bringing the advisors back but a lot of the similar features in civ2. Example, throne room. Also, the wonder movies were way better. I was excited when I heard they were bringing wonder movies back, but wow they are unimpressive. They are entirely generic, I just don't get it. However, in the same vain, I love the Nimoy quotes and I think they really add to the game. They should bring back the joyful joyful music when you win too. And even the hall of fame is somehow less interesting than it used to be. Remember the days of % scores where you could go to like 300% if you won in deity?

The only thing I fear regarding the 'useful' advisors is that checking them would say just become a necessary chore. Yes, advisors became repetitive but you could just ignore them until you felt like you could use some amusement again. Whereas if you had advisors who you felt you had to check every certain number of turns to get the most important information possible would be annoying.

True. But the solution could be quite simple, indeed:

For one, those "Useful hints" should be quite rare and recognizable as what they are (so you don't simply click them away).

Second, the AIs would get those hints, as well (and SHOULD be able to make some use of them) - when you switch them off, they don't get them, either. Problem solved.

I don't particularly miss the advisors from Civ 3. Either they're stating the obvious or they were just giving bad advice. And they also get really repetitive.
