Why do they get Furious after me ?

I always had hard time keeping my reputation good so I've read recently many threads about rep hits etc...

I never manage to win diplomatic above Regent.

In my last Game (Celts Emperor Medium Map all Random) I tried to use every bit of advice I read on this forum to keep my reputation clean with most of the civs.
I was on a Medium Island along with the French and the Americans. The other Civs were on other islands.

Of course I had to wipe the Americans and the French to get enough space and ressources, and they became Furious after me because I captured them several cities : I needed the Iron near Washington to build Gallic Swordmen, and I needed those Furs from Orleans and Dyes from New York too.

But I tried to keep my reputation towards the other civs, I never broke a deal and so on. Only th French and Americans were Furious toward me.

I had several deals with the Vikings, thanks to their Lighthouse they were able to trade across the sea (I'm still in very early Middle-Age, no Astronomy).

Unfortunatly, the Japanese (living on the same island as the Vikings) started a war with the Vikings, and they captured the city with the LightHouse, so it wasn't possible to trade with the Vikings anymore !

The vikings were "Polite" towards me, and then they instantly dropped to "Furious" !

I know the fact that an active trade gives better attitude, they should have dropped to "Cautious" or maybe "Annoyed", but why did they go Furious ?

That's not my fault, isn't it ?

And that's not all, every other civ is now Annoyed with me !

I think the AI consider that I broke the deal, but it has nothing to do with me, It's the Japanese's Fault !

I think it's a bug !

It is, sadly :(
The AI doesn't care how or why you broke a deal... what they are concerned about is that they are not receiving what you agreed to give them. Hence, if you want to keep your rep. completely clean, before signing ANY deal, be sure that nothing will be able to brake it before 20 turns. Even signing a deal with a Civ that is destroyed before those 20 turns is considered a betrayal.

If you aim for Diplomatic win, simply don't go to war. On Regent you can out-expand and out-research the AI, sell or even give them techs, and build UN. Then bribe everyone to war against the other competitor and win.

One game on monarch I had, I was the Mongols and the Chinese were my neighbors. A volcano took out gems that I was trading to them. They were still my best friends during the game, just couldn't trade them gpt.

You’re also confusing Attitude and Reputation. Attitude refers to how much the AIs like you. It is covered in this article by Bamspeedy . Reputation refers to whether the AI will accept your per-turn payments, and it is covered in this article by microbe.

It is possible to have a broken reputation yet still have the AIs love you. It is also possible to have every AI furious at you and yet still maintain a clean rep.

If your goal is a UN victory, attitude is the key. Maintaining your reputation definitely helps (since having active trade helps attitude), but is not necessary. Take a look at the Bamspeedy’s attitude article. You need to avoid doing the things that cause permanent attitude hit. And since all other attitude factors are temporary, you simply need to apply them right before the UN vote to earn yourself a diplomatic win. Good Luck!
