Greetings,I would like to learn your motivations when you declare war agaist a rival, and see which motivation is that which the majority has.

It really depends on circumstance. I don't think any civ player approaches a game with a game plan as to how they intend to start wars.

Civ is a kind of ''mirror'' to the real life,ut least as far as wars.So the number one reason of declaring a war is because of the resources.
Damm...we have been killing each other for milleniums in order to take control of the rasources.

A wish for THE FINAL.Euro 2004!

it can be all...
but i do have a "plan" for what reason.. just base it on your personality

im REALLY sensitive about my territory (dont be mistaken... willing to share and stuff but must have good relation or PERMISSION).
i wish i can just go up and kill those who trespass.. but that somehow makes you "look like a bad guy to everyone else".
also... it annoys me that my "transport" or worker who happens to pass some terriory to get to another spot gets warned "right away to leave or declare war" either that turn or one more time after... and yet computer can do it for 3 turns...

i chose "divided my country in two" since it relates best. most of the time i either culturally swallow it... "propaganda" it when i discover epionage, or i find a reason to declare war... like saying "take your empty threats else where" on purpose.

This is a problem that AI had from the beggining,it just can't stop sending units throw the other's territory.Especialy when a war it going on with a civ right to your borders. Realy Annoying. But can't declare war each and every time.

Actually, although galleys, settlers, scouts and workers get warned, the AI doesn't insist they leave. Just tell them you're sorry and carry on with what you're doing. It will insist for military units though.

If the AI's units are just passing through my territory to clobber someone else, I let them. If they want to kill each other, why should I stop them? I've given ROPs to both sides in a war.

If you want to rule the world, not everybody is going to agree.

Genocide agaisnt civs for some things they've did to me in the past when my millitary wasnt so strong/when i was a noob. Resources also come in. Domination/Conquest also.

I've only owned Civ for a couple of weeks, but so far i've found my self attacking for a few reasons.
Im my war against the French, i need the saltpeter they stole of me and war was my only option. I had conquered the Germans earlier, so my empire was divided in two. Another upside to getting rid of the French was that i'd then be able to unite my empire! So sometimes for me there is more than one reason for declaring war.
In my war against the British, i needed my territory back. The damn Pomms built a line of cities right through my empire!

I think it depends on who you are playing... If you have an early speacial Unit :egypt: really just want that Golden Age :D ... It just so happens you start a war trying to get it:eek:

But that is not necessarily bad. Often I use a strategy to war right away. I consider anyone I meet an agressor trying to take my rightful land ( even if it is clear across the continent :crazyeye: )
So once I find someone (time ofcourse depends on civ total and world size) I head into war. If more than one civ is contacted early on I pick whcih has a superior tactical position upon the other. That way once I hurt the other into submission I am set up for a new target.

It is imporant to not get involved in to many wars at once... So if you see your future enemy building up and preparing make peace with your current enemy. It is often best to immediately engage in war with this war mongering fool on your border :mischief:

However, since this civ has not likely been involved in war they have more infrastructure than you. Therefore you need to equalize the playing field before you can actually 'gain' from this war. Do this by taking no prisoners (cities). Lay everything to waist. :nuke: It may seem waistfull but you won't think so if they come storming in and take them all back.

After you have laid a good amount of your new enemies cities to waist see if they will give you some tech for peace.. Or some cities. Once you acheive peace again stay that way until you get hungry for some new blood:evil:

Try to avoid going to war with the same civ over and over again... They will do crazy stuff if they get too [pissed] IMO. Best to in fact make them happy after you pulverize them and become strong allies... And you can always know who is the true master :spank:

Usually I go to war to either...

A. Gain territory for a domination/conquest victory or
B. To gain resources that I do not have.

Some times I just do it because they have repeatedly put troops into my terrority and I feel like teaching them a lesson.

Usually for me its a simple matter of land/power/money/resources.

But I have been known to go to war just because I dislike a country or the AI has treated me badly. For example, in my latest game, i've declared war on the Netherlands in the late 1800s, simply because they tried to steal a small island from me in about 50BC.
I had to wait almost 2000 years, but those SOBs are getting whats coming to em! :D

Sometimes i'll wage strategic wars too. Its easier to maintain a dominant position if you carefully prune other nations so no single one of them ever becomes powerful enough to rival you (keep em all at the same level). That can be a dangerous political game though :)

I voted on the first. With some early ancient wars you can get enough terittory to have all of the resources... (strategic). If you want to get all of the luxuries, you have to conquer the other continent, or trade :D... choose one! I usually clean up my continent till middle industrial than if I want to win with domination, I organise a D-day, than crush the other continent's civs... simple and good! :D

@Kokoras: Greece will win Euro 2004! :D I hope... at least!

All of the above, really. There are a zillion reasons to declare war...

It varies ... reasons I've declared war for include:

1) Continuous violations of my borders.
2) To achieve Domination or Conquest victory.
3) To gain control of key resources.
4) To gain control of strategic locations (bottlenecks and the like).
5) To prevent an AI form reaching Diplomatic, Cultural or Space victory.
6) To stop an AI from becoming to powerful.
7) Boredom.

I do it because I hate the other civ and sometimes i want Iron. And sometimes because they are a temptaion to attack!

If not aiming for a domination victory, I declare war mainly to gain access to strategic resources that I am unable to get in trade for a reasonable cost. I also will declare war on a weak civ that is getting assimilated by a strong rival of mine, to prevent said rival from growing any larger.

I declare because I know I will punish them and they cannot stand the might of my glorious armies! :)

I declare war to gain luxuries and resources. Of course, those "luxuries" and "resources" may simply be their lands and cities, and my real intention is to rule the world.
