I declare war whenever I have enough offensive units to thwart off any annoying neighbors who expand quickly and make me feel jealous of their might and intelligence. Sometimes civ neighbors expand quickly depending on thier actions or good starting locations with bonus resources. Some players will just rush off to war as they believe that the longer we wait, the more our rivals become a lot stronger and advances to a new era.

Hahaha, this is funny, cause Im playing a game right now that'll relate perfectly with this.

Okay, I started on a huge cont., Im the Mayans, and to my north, I have America, and Inca, and to my south I have Iriquious.

I had a very good start and I was expanding very fast.
And my culutre was soaring.
So was Americas, and we both was the super powers of that cont.
Inca had 6 or 7 cities stretched apart covering the very tip top of the cont.
America was under it, with 20 something cities.
I was under america with 20 something cities also, and Iriquious have 9 or 10 cities stretched apart in the south along the coast.
So im playing and I say sheesh, Im bored,, so I contact america, and demand a few things, to see if he will give it to me.
He didnt, so I declared on him. Since Atlanta had flipped over to my nation, I used it as a military base.
I put out a couple of javelin throwers and a few medievil infantry and took st. louis and detroit.
Then I took some of his cities to the east.
and I brought all of my units to his capital and took it.
pushing him back to seattle, I took that, and then he was gone.
With no problem.
So now, I was the ONLY super power , with iriqious cities flipping to my every few years, I was doing great.
But I knew it was time to meet other nations, but I had no coastal cities.
So I declared on Inca, defeating them VERY easily, because his cities was lined up all in a row.
So I just took one city, healed a bit, and moved on.
Thats when I controlled the lighthouse.
+-+So, with america and inca gone, it was just ME and Iriqious.
And with my coastal cities, I also met gemany, celts and spain.
Celts was trying to bully me, asking for techs, I said no, so he declared.
I rushed a few units over there, and bam!, took the first city I saw, no problem.
Then I got germany in the war, seeing that celts and gemany was neighbors, germany took 5 or 6 cities to himself.
But all hell broke loose, cause then celts had cavalry, and I didnt .
so, he started to slaughter me (well, not really, he j
ust took back his own cities).
And I had NO saltpeter to build cavalry, but too my luck, the only supply on the island was in iriqious territory.
well, to make a long story short, I made peace with the celts, and for some ODD reason iriqious declared on me, for NO reason at all,and I ended up destroying him, getting the saltpeter, owning the entire cont. to myself AND being the largest pop. in the world.
Im not finished yet with the game though, I'll just have to see how it turns out.

In closing, I declare war when Im bored.

I don't. It's a bad habit I have, I'm very reluctant to start a war. War will come to me anyway. When it does I usually have a plan for which cities/resources I want though.

I did't notice anyone mention this, which always is a reason me, among all those others.
It's the only way to get great leaders (PTW).

I declare war because I need more land. As soon as it becomes clear that an AI nation is taking up space my citizens could be using, I'd prepare to attack.

Of course, I'm generally very sneaky and make sure that they have to fight on two fronts.

The other reason I declare war is to slow down the growth of another nation. If I see a nation is getting pretty powerful on another continent, I arrange for its neighbours and I to go and attack it.

You missed the option of the polls i would have probably voted for.
boredom
during the last 1 and a half ages their is very little else to do.
I missed many options, I know. But it's too late to change it. I percieved these choises as the most basical.

Same as most : to get more territory and resources and out of boredom (sometimes).

When i want resources or when an AI civ really annoys me and deserves a beating. :devil2:

Other: Boredom

I really feel sick! I missed the option "Boredom" while the 40% of you people says that his reason is boredom!

I always build up a reasonably strong army in the beginning and destroy my closest civ(to get a larger territory), then I mess with the buildings for a while and then just start removing other civ-s 1 by 1
So I really don't have any specific reason to declare war on them(well sometimes when I dont get some resource then this may become the reason)

I go to war to ensure i survive. If you don't invade others, your country doesn't grow and you lack, or are likely to lack, key resources. War helps you become powerful, stops enemies from becoming too powerful AND is great fun!

I generally go to war to remove those annoying little towns the AI seems to love building on land near my base region I'd already earmarked for myself.

I'm also a colonialist, launching overseas wars to secure control of resources so that I won't need to pay exorbitant prices just to get my empire supplied with all possible luxuries and other resources:evil:

Uh, my military advisor makes me do it?

But seriously, my DoW is usually for territory, resource and/or lux.

When I am attacked first then it is simply a matter of honor.

I decalre war to get all the civs to fit neatly in the diplomacy screen... once i have all the heads filled up, then i declare war because im so big that i can, then i declare war because i want to see the world, then i declare war because i get bored with seeing the world and want to see what global warming does.. and eventually the game either ends or everyone is dead.
