They need better info on what becomes obsolete. There's a few things that show when they are obsolete but the fact that it's only a few is quite random and odd.
I agree they should identify obsolescence. It appears they do it for historical reasons though. When the village is small they would have feasts. Later on with larger populations feasts would become festivals.

Exactly one thing lets you know in the tech tree when it goes obsolete: Stone Pits. So the devs made the UI for obsoletion alerts but never got around to actually implement it beyond the test case.
With the tech tree being as nonsensical and broken as it is, with many units and buildings being unlocked by wrong techs in the wrong era and so on, there's definitely higher priorities than updating those notifications though.
