I am not a farmer, but I know that with same amount of land, rice crop could provide 2~3 times as much food as wheet. Why in Civ4, rice give less food than wheet or corn?
I wondered that too, but then I realized that silver gives almost as much commerce as does gold, despite being historically worth about 1/12 as much per ounce, and currently having about 1/50th the value of gold.

Moreover, the oil industry is considerably more lucrative than the gold/silver mining industry - so why only +1 commerce?
Oh well, it's game mechanics.
Isn't the reason why gold is more valuable because silver is more common and easier to extract than gold so that silver mine could be producing more of a less valuable commodity.
