Why have I become a warmonger?

I'm playing a game at divinity level.

After great effort I've managed to be the 2nd score civ.

I haven't much hope to win, but I'm enjoying the struggle. At least I was...

As in 1540 I suddenly declare war on the 1st civ and her vassals, without any apparent reason.
Really not what I wanted, I'm doomed to be defeated.

I wasn't bound to any defensive alliance.

Nor was I involved in any war in the previous turns.

If this is not a bug, I would be glad if someone could explain to me why one can suddenly, unwillingly and stupidly declare war against another civ.

I've attached the save.

Thank you for the answer.

I can't ckeck the save because I'm at work, but was there an Apostolic Palace vote for 'war on the infidels'? It's the only way you can be forced to declare war except Defensive Pact.

Though I guess someone competing at Deity knows about the AP... would be quite shocking if not ;)

:band: Welcome to CFC :band:
a few observations:
1) It does not happen for me - is there anything one has to do to trigger this?
2) A few Civs have already been eliminated so I assume you have fallen victim to the following bug: when anyone creates a colony in BtS after another Civ has been eliminated the new colony will take over the ID of the eliminated Civ this includes the state of diplomacy that one had when it was eliminated, most likely the AI created a new colony and it reincarnated a Civ you were previously at war with. You might want to install Bhruic's Unofficial patch (stickied in the main BtS forum)
3) a nitpick: disabling city flipping from culture but enabling city flipping after conquest does not work, the latter cannot work when the former is checked :p

Thank you for your answers.

Iron Crow:

If they gathered at the AP, they forgot to notice me.
There wasn't any vote I'm aware of.

Ori:

Thank you for your warm welcome.

1)I just tried again, and as soon as I press the "end turn" button I declare war to half the world!
2)Your observation makes sense. There was some colonial warfare and I think you are likely to have found the culprit.
3)Thank you for the hint

I'll try the patch, but I doubt it will restore the current situation.
Hell, 18 civs at Deity on a small Terra map, most things random...I'll have to try once again...

I guess it's not the reason in this case, but you wouldn't get a vote if it was. The 'war on the infidels' can only be waged against a civ that is not a member of the AP, read: that has no cities with that religion. And if you have no cities with the AP religion, you're not eligible to vote.

I once got a random event which caused me to declare war on a civ; could it be that?

I would not open the save, so I can't confirm this.

None of this answers my question about the problem. This just happened to me right out the blue. I had a defensive pact with Persia, Russia, and Spain when right after ending the turn I got the message that I had declared war on the Celtics. The Celtics then declared war on the Persians. Could not have been the "Declare war on infidels because I have the AP and would have to authorize the vote. Can't be the colony bug because no Civ has been eliminated. No colonies either. Either way until this gets fixed I guess I'll go back to Warlords or maybe all the way back to civ 3.

Uh, that's it right there. You had a defensive pact with Persia. The Celts declared war on Persia. Therefore you were obligated to respond to your defensive pact, and declared war on the Celts.

Oh my, should have realized that. MY MISTAKE.

Thanks a lot.

I get the same problem and it has happened on several games now, I think it's an error with the messages. I reached 1960 and received a message that "you have declared war on Victoria", likewise for all her vassals/allies. So I went back to last save and cancelled my defensive pact with Boudica, now the message is "Victoria has declared war on Boudica". It appears the game isn't really explaining what's happened very well.

It appears the game isn't really explaining what's happened very well.

It seems that sometimes the messages can appear out of sequence, for example I've had friendly civs declare on me for no apparent reason whilst I am at war with a mutual enemy. Upon looking back through the messages I see

<friendly civ> has declared war on you!
a great scientist is born!
a cities border has expanded!
a great artist has been born!
<enemy civ> has agreed to become a vassal of <friendly civ>!

and it's only when you see the last message that you understand what has happened.
