Why is it that when we ask an A.I. ali to declare war
against an enemy, they always say "We have no cantact with the... ", but when they ask you to declare war against an enemy you had never before met, you have to either say "no they have done us no harm..." or some such thing, or "yes let us teach the
...some misc. civilization...a lesson." etc.?

I know. I am a new-b and thought that that button was to make a post. I couldn't make a poll if i'd replied to the right forrum anyway.
Did you vote?

:die: Why Is that? I think it's very strange. I mean, why do we have to say yes or no, and they are allowed to say "We have no contact with the... :ar15: ...!" I mean they're just computers! :die:

It's perhaps another way the AI manages to cheat. Strange that they sometimes have "no contact" with another AI civ on the same continent, even if their border is only a few tiles away?

IIRC, most of the time the AI asks you to go to war with another civ, you are at peace, have a cease-fire, or are allied with that civ. I do not recall any time that it has come up in one of my games where I did not have contact with the target civ! Maybe the AI cheats here to, and only asks you to go to war when it knows you are in contact with the target civ? Comments....

I just remembered!
In a game I was playing, the Persians had been at war with the Russians, and so had I. The Persians signed a peace treaty with the Russians, upon which they demanded knowlage, or they would go to war with me. I finnaly rekindled the old alliance with the Persians, and mannaged to make them worshipful of me. I then asked if they would go back to war with the Russians, where upon they imediatly said "We have no contact with the Russians". THAT has got to be cheating! Isn't it?

Maybe it depends on versions, but I think that has happened to me a few times.

Nope. This is actually a nice way to curry favor early on. If a civ asks you to declare war on a nation with whom you have no formal agreements (cease fire/peace/alliance) then you can declare war on them with no reputation hit. Since you've never met them, you don't have any agreements. I think we did this in both the D+1 and D+2 succession games. This can help get an early alliance. The nation you declare war on will probably never think very highly of you, but the other nations treat you as if nothing ever happened.

Me too. And if you then build Marco Polo's embassy, the formerly unknown target civ will show as being aware that you've declared war on them.

:rocket2: However, it sometimes seems that undeclared war is the default state of relations between civs which haven't met yet. Why else would early AI ships automatically attack your units on the shore, lacking the ability to introduce themselves?

(That's one advantage of Call to Power: in that game, naval units can make formal first contact).

AAAGGG what are D+1 and D+2 succession games????????????
There is a way to alter the text files to provide levels of difficulty above Deity (worse unhappiness, even smaller production and food boxes for the AI, etc.) IIRC, this only works in Classic(2.4.2) version of Civ. We've had several succession games at these higher levels over the past several months...the threads can be found in the Stories and Tales forum.
