Why is the Landsknecht frowned upon?

I have the impression that the Landsknecht is not very highly regarded on the forum. The way I see it, it is basically a cheaper maceman, 60 vs 70, so I can build my army faster than if I were building regular maces. So why is this UU frowned upon?

It's a reasonable unit for stack defense, but it's only 6 strenght IIRC. For attacking archers in cities even swords are stronger and only two thirds of the price.

It's not that simple, Mace has less of a melee bonus, but 2 higher strength...

I wont really put the Landsknecht down, since I remember Snaaty would exclusively play with that UU in a lot of our AW deity games. It has its advantages when the AI hits you with 40-unit stacks around that time... lots of it horses that will ignore the FS of your super-longbows.

As for your typical standard game... I don't really care for something that only has a movement of 1... but I guess it's a matter of choice. If you're using a speed-cheat, then I guess that issue is moot.

That's true, I forgot about attacking cities with archers and longbows. (But against mounted units they are as good as pikes, and against melee they are as good as maces, so they shouldn't be that bad... )

Landsknecht are good on the defence. You want to be on the offence.
