Why no Vertical, y-axis, scrolling?

Anyone have any ideas why we don't see some random maps for new games generated with both X and Y axis scrolling? I have always seen X but never Y.

You can add Y-scrolling if you have PTW. In the PTW-editor, just make a new map, and enable the Y-axis wrap option. Save it in the scenarios-folder, and load it in Civ-PTW. Now you have a Y-wrapped game. Otherwise it is not possible.

I'm just glad the x-axis scrolling actually works properly. Remember CIV 2 where you'd have a ship one tile east of the vertical 'scroll line', try to send it on goto to five tiles west of the line, and it would circumnavigate the world to get there?

PIderman,

Yes I know you can get this scrolling in scenarios, but why not in regular game. Better yet would be a random mixture of Both X-Y and some X only.

The only reason I can think of for not both is a bug in the map generator where if both are enabled the poles connect and there is no open water between continents.

Even with this bug it does make for a different play experience. Just surprised Firaxis did not make this a preference or random part of the game.

I dunno, I don't see no icecap in my game (of course...)

Seriously, they probably figgered the world is not a donut, but rather a cylinder.

Warpstorm,

For scenarios, polar regions are a toggleable preference.

You have no icecap cause you nuked everyone and your warm expressions of joy and delight melted all the ice.

Well at least we have a cylinder world instead of a flat world. Maybe in a future revision we will have a round world.

With the ice melting above Canada some ships are already going thru the northern polar route instead of going around. With navies taking so long, the option of crossing over to the North or South seems like it would add another dimension to the game.

{Good thing I am a perfect coder ;-) }

We just finished a HUGE SG (K7 - link in my sig) with y-wrapping and encountered a bug with city name display. Aside from that small glitch it works fine - though it will often make a huge part of the map go Tundra......

Killer,

Confirmed I have the same problem with city name display with both XY on. The problem seems confined to those cities on Tundra or very close to Tundra. This is on a standard map.

For the tundra problem, there is always the option of no ice caps. But I have not generated a map with both XY and no ice caps to know what it is like.

PF, I tried 'no caps', but all land in these latitudes will have a lot of Tundra anyways.

Selecting warm climate helps a bit, but this makes the tropics go desert

Killer,

Another problem with PTW and Y scrolling is often, in/near tundra, user completes road but road is not visible until move worker off tile.

Looks like we may have to wait for a new patch before we can use Y scrolling.
