Why not Reissue the Original X-Com?

I mean X-Com with better graphics and some annoying bugs removed. They might also make the defection of countries to the alien side depend on your performance instead of being inevitable after a while. And it's a bit silly that on the hardest difficulty level, the first alien base is always in Antarctica. And if they made the soldiers look just a teeny bit more individualized (and their faces visible throughout the game), then I'd be completely happy.

That's all, really. I wouldn't want any "brilliant" new ideas. All I desire is the original game, bug-free and with better graphics.

I've heard of it, but frankly I prefer 1999.

The whole package of the originals (first 5 games) is available on Steam for 15$.
I bought it and I'm pretty satisfied so far. Yeah, better graphics would be nice, but the game is still good without them. Even the controls aren't too dated.

Reissue : yes (done)
Remake : not necessary (IMO)

I would love to see a reissue of all the originals come back out. UFO Defense/Enemy Unknown could just use a facelift. TFTD could benefit from some restructuring of items. And Apacolypse I am not sure on. I am all for a reissue of the old ones, even if all they did was clean up the graphics, I would actually purchase it on sight. I would actualy be more cautious if they did do anything to the gameplay. X-Com clones just always have something that the original game did better.

I played and still do sometimes UFO Aftermath. Its ok, but every game plays out exactly the same. The first hour of gameplay is the same every time pretty much. But I do like that when your interceptors get shot down, you have a rescue mission for the pilots and stuff. It has some neat ideas but just never fully delivers.

I had the X-Com collector's edition but my car got broken into and it got stolen. Oh how that sucked. I take it as a karma thing. I haven't found another copy yet that isn't online and I think I may go with that steam version soon.

The unofficial rumor is that Irrational Games is working on it since 2K bought the rights.

My feelings exactly. And if Irrational Games could just reissue the original X-Com (alias UFO: Enemy Unknown) with better graphics and the bugs fixed, I'd be so grateful. No "improvements of the game", please, please, please! Of course, they really should change the panel showing a victim in the message announcing "Aliens terrorize Melbourne/Cairo/Tokyo/Whatever". In the original game, he looks like a vampire for some unfathomable reason. But definitely the original game music, especially the mission music, which really puts your nerves on the top of your skin. One evening when I was in the middle of a mission, the phone suddenly rang and I almost jumped up through the ceiling!

But can you play the game on a modern computer? I can live without better graphics, but I just can't play UFO with Windows 98 or later.

Yeah, I ran X-Com collectors edition with no problems on XP. What's weird though is I had to put in a really crappy video card to run it. As soon as I upgaded my video card, X-Com spazzed out on me. I hated having to swap the card in and out all the time for 1 game, but that game was so worth it.

I play the original on a gamer's (2006) laptop with Windows XP SP2, and it works fine.

Via Steam. Hassle free, launches DosBox at start, no special configuration needed.

If they are going to remake the original; an improved interface is at the top of my list. The interface that X-COM has now is in dire need of a facelift among other things.

If you can then point me towards their website so I can order the game, I will be very grateful. It comes with DosBox, I take it?

ArneHD: better graphics and some bugs removed is all I wish for, really. I don't want a remake.

Hmm, I don't know, I got steam when I purchased the Orange box.
I guess you could try 'Steamstore.com'.

I finished the first X-Com and have now began Terror from the Deep. I had never played it before for some reason and I'm a bit frustrated at the difficulty. Still, good game.

They could make the graphics worse and I would still buy it, as long as I can play it on my computer I'll always buy it.

Though a few changes I wouldn't mind like haveing the alternative to use laser weapons in TFTD, gravity from Apoc, more structures in city maps(I swear half the map are empty lots and parks), more randomization in the maps(every cruise ship was the same, the beaches on the ilands were always the same) and possibly even Real Time option from Apoc as well. Oh and some super hard to kill aliens like the Lobstermen from TFTD. Gawd I hated those guys so much

...at least until you get decent alien guns such as the sonic blaster, IIRC

btw, there's a freeware "remake" (well, at least heavily inspired by x-com)

UFO - Alien Invation though I haven't checked that one out yet...I test-played the commercial version that's been mentioned further up and I didn't like it...

Who owns the X-Com property? Is it Valve?

X-Com has a hybrid FPS would be awesome, with like a general handling strategic base issues between rounds of FPS glory against the aliens.

There's actually been tons of remakes, including a combat game from the original developers to those "UFO" titles that have lots of sequels, and the Matrix clone mentioned above. Not to mention a couple of freeware remakes in progress.

A question to TFTD players :
After getting struck in research limbo for months because of the 'Deep One dilemma', I am now stuck again after researching the Manta and Hammerhead subs.
I know I had to get a Lobsterman commander, so I cleared space in my alien containment, ambushed a base with 10 of my troops, stunned the commanders and carried THREE of them to the exit.
At the end of the mission I was credited with the points for 3 live aliens recovered, but when I got back to the base they did not appear in my stocks, and the research path is still blocked. WTH is that ?
Thinking it's some kind of buck I built another alien containment facility just to be sure and my guys are now ready to take on another alien base. Should I go, or am I wasting my time, or am I still missing something ?

EDIT @H_C : As stated above my alien containment was totally empty at the start of the mission (to the point that I could scrape it if I wanted), so I don't know what happened.

Well, you could check to see if your previous alien containment is full. (if it wasn't then i dunno why else - maybe another tech requirement ...)

Have you reasearched everybody else?
