I am Austria and hope to get vassal with peaceful way. But I found that even I give tech and make them become friendly they still won't be my vassal

Or should I use my force??

It depends on the leader whether they will peace-vassalize or not. Based on their historic role/behaviour.
There are some leaders who would never willingly vassalize to anyone, even if you have friendly relations and you are totally dominating them.
This is not the case for most of them though.

And sometimes quite headache for non-peaceful vassal as if I give too hard attack they will collapse.
So the mission 2 of Austria is quite skillful...
And why Austria can't get the historical land for Burgundy?? Also the Italy (Doc 1700 Austria get Milan and Sicily)

If anything bugs me about vassals it’s their happy willingness to collapse themselves by snatching up every independent city, even if its on the other side of the map.

Dammit, Habsburg Poland...

Yes, attacking independent-->independed -->attacking independent -->Independed.....

AI have no talent to analysis their situation...

Makes me feel like Jaime Lannister talking to silly ol' Walder Frey. "The Independents don't fear the Bulgarians. They fear the Hungarians. We gave you Krayova to hold Krayova. If we have to ride south and take it back for you every time you lose it... why do we need you?"

its an old feature, but recently Absinthe gave the AI at least some sense about this.
Indeed, I tried to improve on this for 1.5.
The AI will target far away cities much less often than before.
How often does this happen in your games?

It generally happens when the map is “filled up,” as in there’s nowhere else to expand naturally so the AI sends stacks out to the middle of nowhere (often southern Russia cuz it’s full of indy cities after the Kiev collapse) to conquer bits and pieces.

I guess the eventual Crimea civ will help with that too, not to mention Sicily (the indy cities in Southern Italy are another common target)

Shouldn't unstable civs be very likely to lose faraway cities in the middle of nowhere to secession, which should help with their stability problems?

hahaha, the infamous rainbow apulia, calabria and sicilia

there's like 5 cities with different owner in that cramped space.

It’s true! Now granted I do think the new Byzantine army and eventual Sicily civ will help with that. Not sure what would help with southern Russia—Hungary is a common nation that gobbles up a lot of those cities.

crimea khanate may help you. btw mission 1 of Russia should need to change.

As it was said before, ~1400 the maps is full of cities, then many big civs start to mop up all the indy cities. In general spain mopping in france and italy, germany in the east from poland to russia, austria just takes everything, hungary and ottoman go north-east, morocco goes till jerusalem...and so on.

That’s a good summary of which civs expand into which indy cities.

Still though I usually see the opposite issue of France conquering Pampelune and maybe even Barcelone. Germany does take random crap in the east, although Poland is historically accurate. Ottomans should try and expand northeast, Hungary less so. Morocco should be stopped by Egypt eventually.

You are right, but usually france collapse in midgame and spain mops up. If not, than france creep beyond pirrenese and mop in the levant.
Oh and ottomans should aim to the carpathian basin, not for crimea.

Recently I touched this too. From the changelog:
- Decreased civs general willingness to target far-away independent cities
- Vassal civs are set to never target indy and barb cities outside their war maps
Will see how much does it improve on the current situation.

In related news, I'm now finalizing the changes in the update.
Will be up tomorrow.
Maybe tonight, if I manage to stay awake for a couple more hours. Wouldn't bet on that though :)
