Why would anyone build the Internet?

It is made available in one of the last 2 or 3 techs and because of this it is pointless IMHO! Unless you decide to take all of your science off and put it into something else and wait for two other civs to get something that you don't the last 1 or 2 techs! I don't see a point in it...maybe it should be sooner in the tech tree!?!? What are your feelings on this?

I guess you could make a beeline to it...maybe I'll try this strat out!

If you beeline for it I daresay you could make good use of the thing, but even so remember that future techs now actually help your civ out, not just your score. Each future tech adds 1 happiness and 1 health to your cities - that's pretty darned significant, especially after you get three or four of them.

So is each future tech different from the other? (i.e. Future Tech I, Future Tech II)? If so then I can see your point on that as well! But if it isn't different...then you would only get it one time!

If Space Race victory is ON, I think the internet is useless because game should be nearing end by this time. Even w/o Space Race it's usefuness is no where near the Great Library in Civ 3.

Future techs are different in name and have to be discovered separately but they all have the same effect ( +1 :) and +1 health )

While future techs are significant. If you are getting them from the internet that means that AI is done with their research and soon will be done with their spaceship so you shouldn't be spending your hammers on internet but rather get busy with SS. In most of the cases discovery of future techs would also mean that the the year 2050 is not far so you'll really not reap much from the internet - these hammers can be better spent elsewhere.
That's my humble opinion.

BTW: it's about time we introduce health smiley ;)

I agree with you on that! That is why I turn off Space Race and Time! That way I can take over the world!:king:

That being the case...then it would be useful! But only if the other civs continue to pusue them!

Has anyone found out if the computer civs continue to purse Future Techs?

If you're still doing stuff at that point in the game, then you likely have very large cities and the extra health and happiness can be significant.

For the most part, though, the Internet is completely useless - perhaps why they have Al Gore for the picture :)

I agree, it does seem like the internet is useless if space race is on. I'm only saying this based on one game I played on Warlord, where I was racing for space and couldn't afford to waste time on the internet

The Internet should allow you to get Hit Singles and Hit Movies without having to build the wonders that they come from

;)

When I get around to modding the game, that's gonna be one of the first things I do.

The only reason I built the internet was to stop some free loader from benefiting from my research.

The internet actually won a game for me in a scenario where several other civs collaborated to a tech lead. Thank you Mr. Gore.
The internet definitely has it's uses.

You can turn the 2050 game over off?

You can with custom game, i always disable time/space race and U.N.

Agreed. I am much more of a "be nice until I have 500 tanks" type person, and after playing a few games, got tired of losing just because some civ on a distant continent won the space race.

The default game is OK for learning your way around for a few games, but I never liked the space race part especially. UN is OK if I have it, but if other civs have it, can be a real pain, so I usually turn it off.

Q: Why would anyone build the Internet?

A: Ask Al Gore why he did it! :yeah:
