Ok this verry simple and stupid question, but can someone tell me why AC had such a little suxes comperd to other civ games.

I think it is because of the techs. Everybody knows what a wheel is but only few know what superstring theorie is. People are more interested in history than in science fiction.

Another point is that the auto unit creator is crap. Much to complicated for most people who want to have a joyfull competition after a workday. They just want to be entertained and don´t want to "work" again.

Just my 2 cents.

I think Taé Shala put it very well. Furthermore I think it has been harder to come by than the other games and has thus sold less. Personally I love it, but I suppose that many of the one's who are playing "traditional Civ" find SMAC too complex. It's not as straightforward as the Civ-games. And of course, while one might argue that Civ III is a whole knew game and cannot be compared to Civ II because of that, the fact remains that Civ II and III build on a game that became a great success in its time. The point is the same in all those games. Build a empire that will stand the test of time or whatever it says in the beginning, but SMAC is a whole knew game. And yes I almost forgot about this one. The controls in SMAC are completely different than in Civ II so I think that many people who tried out SMAC got tired before they got into it because they thought they knew the basic comands and what to do, but turns out they didn't and then they had to put lots of time into learning everythin all over or just then give up... :(

But no matter, I still got my SMAC in working order:D Wonder wheter it will work in Win XP?

Great! Then I'm all set to upgrade my crappy dead computer. I don't know what happened to it - it got all mad - and next thing I know a bunch of .dll-files are missing. Don't think it's a virus though, because I haven't got internet at home. But I'll be upgrading it sometime soon because Win98 just isn't what it should be. But it's nice to know that some essential games will be working:D Thanks!

SMAC wont run on my computer... Keeps going on about CPU Incompatiblty... I'm running Pentium 4 2.6 mhz, with Windows XP Home... I'm befuddled as to why it wont work on a pentuim 4 when it runs fine on the 3...

If SMAC/X won't run under a Pentium 4, producing "Processor not supported" errors
then Edit the Alpha Centauri.ini file so that it contains the following lines at the start of the file:

[PREFERENCES]
ForceOldVoxelAlgorithm=1

If you still get cpu not support messages thereafter, just ignore them and click OK, the game will start.

This particular fix should be in the paper and read me documentation shipped with your game. It has been there for years, since before the Pentium 4, originally to deal with some non intel processors.
