I do wish there were more distinctions in firearms. It seems to me that medieval infantry consisted of many weapons (swords/maces/axes) and they are each represented, but then firearms which did have a big difference in abilities have been limited to a 1750/1870/1940 line.
One way to make sure that its not too overpowering is that if you beat a superior weapon, you have a chance to gain that weapon since you've picked it up off the battlefield, as long as you have the base tech (firearm, flight, armor, etc).
