Will Civ 5 have some TOUCH of reality?

Now, you can overly complicate the game by including thousands of different units, or you can use older units of equal strength to represent the differing units. In this case, you would have Longbows in the first line (the withdrawing ability makes this nice and accurate), the second line would be Muskets, while the third line would be Riflemen (and experienced ones at that). Now, some might argue that promotions could be used to distinguish, but that doesn't work either because it's really the equipment that's represented by the power of each unit. If you gave the first line Machine Guns, it doesn't matter how inexperienced they are, they're going to do damage. Here's the fun thing: they still may cut and run, even with the machine guns. Not everyone earns the Red Badge of Courage.

I do wish there were more distinctions in firearms. It seems to me that medieval infantry consisted of many weapons (swords/maces/axes) and they are each represented, but then firearms which did have a big difference in abilities have been limited to a 1750/1870/1940 line.

One way to make sure that its not too overpowering is that if you beat a superior weapon, you have a chance to gain that weapon since you've picked it up off the battlefield, as long as you have the base tech (firearm, flight, armor, etc).

I do think obsolete units should be replaced by "militia" type units. just knights as an example, for the cost of upkeep on the horse/armor u could probably outfit oh I dont know, 100 soldiers w/ m-16's? civ needs a black market.

um.... its called attrition, over time damage is inevitable, unless you become aware of this fact and defend your cities with more then one unit, your sunk. in reality troops dont have an unlimited supply of ammunition on their backs, their bullets cant turn in the air hitting as many enemy's as possable, and sometimes they miss, sure as you say it is easy to take down one unit with one unit, but when it comes to stacks your pushing it just from the attrition recieved degrading your unit

The way round your problem is easy - mod it yourself or request others to do it for you.

e.g. When a unit can no longer be built because of an upgrade, automatically change the unit graphics to the new unit - but keep the old unit values. Thus you still have to pay upgrade costs to get the full benefit of the new unit.

A lot of gameplayers have spacial awareness and can perceive the old units as being weaker modern units - but for those that can not, this is the visual answer.
So a Warrior is changed to a Maceman automatically, but still the same combat strength of a Warrior.
Here's a thought. Make all long distance units stronger against mele units (including Knigts).

actualy i would like ranged units being able to "bombard" adjecent squares to do damage to the units in that square without going into full combat
