Will CIV4 work if I already have DX9.0c?

Sorry if the answer is already in the forums, I've searched but cannot find it. I have a Dell XPS with WINXP, 6800 Ultra and I already have DX9.0c installed (from Age of Empires 3, Doom 3, etc.). Some posts imply that if I already have DX9.0c installed, CIV4 will not install DX, even though CIV4 uses a version of DX that includes some debug code so that it will not work with vanilla DX 9.0c which most other games use. So basically CIV 4 will not run and I am screwed.

My question is, is this true or not? I would like to know before I buy it. Thanks in advance.

It shouldn't be a problem. My computer had DX9.0c installed, and the Civ4 installation went ahead and re-installed it anyway. Everything works fine so it definitely wasn't a problem for me.

If you get the prompt to install DirectX during the Civ 4 install you need the update - simple as that.

thanks for the replies. My fear was that the actual prompt to install DX9 would not display since I already had DX9.0c installed. But if CIV4 still prompts you, it should be ok. Hopefully, CIV4's DX9 with debug code doesn't screw up any other game.

It doesn't have debug code, MS hasn't yet released this version of DirectX yet. There was a thread about this issue somewhere around here...

Like Vael said. It's not debug code; it is the version that they ship out to game developers.

I can vouch first hand, if you have the DX9 install prompt comes up, just do it. I had DX9c and I didn't install and I couldn't run the game so I had go back and install it from the Civ4 CD. They are both version 9 but are not the same. It's common thing with microsoft, god only know how they keep track of their own versions
