Will mastering an understanding of Civ1 help me with Civ3?

I know that sounds like a crazy question, but I keep thinking that if I can just get a handle on Civ1, the core game, I will have a better understanding of Civ3.

Those of you who play both games, do think this is a good idea, or are the two games so different that mastering Civ1 will not help me with Civ3?

I think it'll help. But you might not get the edge you're looking for. If you really wanna get better at Civ3, find a Succession game, and join/read that.

Thanks for the responses.

I'm glad you think plugging away a bit with Civ1 can help me get on top of my Civ3 game. It's really the basic game core, isn't it?

And yes. I did play two Civ3 succession games and learned an incredible amount about the game. But I'm not a good Civ3 player yet.

So you think it makes sense to play both games? (I love them both.)

You wanna play both games, then play both games! There's no rule, even here, that you can only play one Civ game at a time.

I think it will help you master some of the basics, but it will really have limited benefits. So much of Civ 3 is new and not something you can do in Civ 1. The interactions of the new rules with the old also change decision making. Then there are so many unit and technology tree changes. The skills you gain will only be basic and won't really apply all that much.

I think its helpful in the extent you can learn general strategies that you might be able to get away with in both versions. I am only starting to get into Civ III and find it harder to understand, but Alex Johnson's post in another thread gave me some tips...

I guess my fear is playing and getting beaten easily and getting all frustrated. But that's what happened when I started playing civ 1 over ten years ago. So I won't trade in my Civ III just yet...
