Will patch 1.21f outdate or nullify anything in the manual?

Will the new patch have things in it that will overwrite the manual? Improve anything beyond the manual? Or does it just get things like they should have been to begin with so that they agree with the manual?

In other words, if you were new, would you have to learn anything other than what is in the manual if you download patch 1.21f? Is the tech tree the same?

It changes stuff, as did the previous patches. The new readme and Civilopedia and editor help files should be more correct than the manual for this version.

The manual (at least the one that I got) was horribly out of date to begin with. I mean, the illustrations of the diplomacy screen showed the code referencing a particular string, rather than the string itself, some of the units have the wrong A/D/M values, Civ attributes were listed incorrectly. Just goes to show you how rushed this thing really was.

But, if you look at it from Firaxis' point of view, why pay people to beta test it when you can instead have the public beta test it for free? If you make the game patchable, why not rush out an untested unfinished product and just use the gamers feedback and fix it later? A lot of people were ticked off, but if you ask me, I'd rather have the big-time Civvers who know what will make for the best Civ experience giving feedback as to what to change rather than a handful of egghead software people. Now, I'm sure they would like to be paid for their contributions, but life isn't always fair!

That approach has made billions for Microsoft. Wait .... they charge for their "patches" .. they call them UPGRADES:D

Be happy that FIRAXIS is responsive to the CIV users .. and provides the patches free, even if they are flawed. As to the "flaws", if more CIV III gamers would check out CIVEDIT, they would find that they can "mod" the game rules to better suit their unique style of play. :goodjob:

Firaxis does not have to keep improving the game...The original release was great...and they continue to improve the game because they respect their fans...let's join together and respect them for their great work and perserverance

I think Firaxis is doing a mahvelous job

So will there be some advice on how to mark/edit the manual so it corresponds to patch 1.21f? I don't mind making the corrections if only I know what to do.

Good point!! They could have just left it like it was and made their money. But they continue to support it, smart move for them since we civers don't like to be left out in the cold!! These days this is very rare so I agree with louiethelesbo, lets give them respect so they will continue to respect us with more improvements to game. Later!!

I would just keep referring to the civlopedia until you get familiar with unit values, building costs, etc. After playing some games, you should have most of the unit's values memorized.

It would be great if someone (or some people) made an updated list of keyboard shortcuts, unit's a/d/m, building costs, etc. that people could download. So people can print them out, and keep the sheet next to them for easy referral while playing.

Reprinting and distribution of the actual manual, I don't think is allowed.:(

I sent an email to Firaxis once asking if it would be ok for me to fix up the manual, include the patch changes, etc... and then post it here as a "manual mod". I never got an email back. My guess is that means "no". So instead of doing that, I've been working on writing my own 'manual' for the game. We'll see if I get time to finish anytime soon.
