I tried to install Civilization IV and the notice came up to execute and nothing would happen. I downloaded DirectX 9 and still nothing, the cd would just sit in the tray. I went to computer and tried to access directly from the cd and nothing. I couldnt find a solution on here but I found one here.

I couldnt believe it was that simple. I didnt know Vista had this option built into it.
Go to Start, Control Panel, Programs, and "Use and older program with this version of Windows." It'll come up with a program compatibility screen and take you through all the steps you can do manually (i.e. set the compatibility mode, run as administrator, etc.). It worked. No clue why, it just did. So do that.
Now I ran disk 1 and it was fine. Then it asked for disk 2 and sometime into it I hit an error and the program just closed. I then just stuck disk 1 back in and installed again then 2 and everything went through fine. Starting the program I got the This program has know compatibility issues I checked for solutions online and it took me here. http://www.firaxis.com/games/downloads.php
I then decided to hit Run Program and it would hang on the loading page then just disappear. I then decided to run the 1.61 patch. It loaded and played fine. It was buggy on the movies; I could see part of my desktop but still see the movie. I played for a couple of hours then decided to download patch 1.74. Worked fine, played for another hour or so. I still had the bug in the movies though.
Next I tried to install Beyond the Sword.
It installed fine except for one minor error at the end of disk 2 under the window firewall exception list. No big deal just canceled it out and inserted disk 1 to finish. Started and ran fine. I played for a couple of hours. Hope this helps anyone having issues.
