Seeing the 3.19 patch up inspired me to unbury my well-used Civ4 discs for another round of it.

In loading BTS up on Wine 1.1.24 I ran into some problems during the install of the 3.19 patch. Being a little impatient for some Civ time I just booted into Windows and installed in that environment. I played there for 3 days straight. That's the longest Windows has run on my computer in 5 years. I feel a little dirty.

I need to get this running under Linux.

So in addition to installing issues, I am having trouble running 3.19 under Wine 1.1.24. Nothing about 3.19 has hit the WineAppDB yet. The issue is: with 3.19 installed I get prompted for the CD. Odd huh? I have the 100% legit-and-paid-for CD. Previously I had always removed the CD check so I could play under Linux but with 3.19 I thought that wasn't necessary (and as such there aren't "no-cd" patches available).

I'm fairly certain I could install to 3.17 and apply no cd patch and it would work - it has for me before. But before I go and miss all the patchy-goodness, is anyone else having this problem?

Yeah - I know there is some excellent "play on linux" threads on here. But it seems a little unnecessary to install that management software overhead given that I have used Wine directly and successfully up until now.

Try downgrading to Wine 1.1.22. Something in 1.1.23 broke working with Civ; I haven't tried 1.1.24, but at least one other person in the forums having problems with 1.1.24 reported success by downgrading to 1.1.22 on my suggestion.

I used winetricks to install msxml3 and d3dx9, and created a directory as described here to get around a sound bug. Then everything just worked.

Thanks Emperor Norton!

I'm away until Monday - but when I get home this is the first thing I will be running to do (inspite of the gf telling me I should go unpack, cut the lawn, etc. etc.)

@ash88: Did you get it working? I got Civ4 Bts 3.19 to work without any NoCD patches ("vanilla" 1.74 and Warlords 2.13 still need the NoCD patches).

@Emperor_Norton: I got BtS 3.17 working on Wine 1.1.23, 1.1.24, and 1.1.25. I also now have BtS 3.19 working on Wine 1.1.25.

I did the DLLs download, install, and user.reg editing manually- nothing wrong with winetricks, I just wanted to know exactly what was going where and why- guess that is why I am using Linux now instead of Windows....although Ubuntu hides a lot like Windows- not to be secretive but to be easier for everyone. I like that I can still dig into the guts when I have the time to waste or use the GUI when I want WBTYM (Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am).
