is linked to the background music - turn that off and the wonder movies are silent, too.
wonder movie sound should maybe be assigned to atmospheric or so instead?

Well, the movies run a bit choppy along with the music cutting in and out, so there's more to it than that, I think. This game seems to have problems in how it uses memory.

I'm having this problem with the music on the wonders movies chopping in and out. Has anybody worked out a fix, its the only problem I am experiencing at the moment, so it would be great to have a issue free game! ;)

Thanks all.

I always turn in-game music off. But when I turned off the in-game music in Civ4, I lost both the sound in the opening screens and the sound in the Wonders movies. They both play in complete silence, which is weird. There's also an odd lack of audio cues when playing, which I suspect is due to missing musical cues.

Have they inadvertently linked the movie music with the in-game music? It seems so. Hope they fix it soon...

I likewise am interested in figuring out how to fix the problem with sound cutting in and out. I am attaching my dxdiag file in case anyone has any suggestions. I have tried calling and e-mailing the Civ IV people, but the phone lines won't let me through and I've recieved no response to my e-mail.

Thanks all.

Sound skipping / choppy sound in wonder movie problem seems to be related to video "Anti-alias" setting. I had same problem with wonder movie music. Intro movie sound played OK.
But the problem has gone when I set anti-alias setting to 0.

My PC has no performance problem (3.0 GHz P-4 CPU, 1G RAM and PCI-Ex NV GF 6600GT Video/ C-media 8738 based 5.1 ch sound card with S/PDIF optical output and external 5.1 ch digital decoder speaker ) and game played very smoothly even in hightest video / sound setting.

But wonder movie music skips badly only when anti-alias is set to 2 or 4.
The woonder movie video itself looks OK and plays quite smoothly with no skipping/block or screen choppiness.
Lowering video detail, texture setting to LOW, smaller screen size, or setting speaker sound to stereo does not solve the problem. Setting video anti-alias to zero did the trick.
So this is not performance problem, but game sound codec bug, I guess.

.

I'm having this problem as well. Sorry to sound ignorant, but how do you change the anti-alias settings?

Thanks for your help.

Welcome to CFC!

In the game, press escape when it's your turn. As long as there are no pop-ups or menus in the way, this should bring up the in-game menu. Click on Options.

From here, you need to go to Graphics, then select "0" from the Anti-Aliasing Multisamples box. Hit Exit and it will save your settings. Wonder Movies should now play OK, although the game itself will look a tiny bit rough around the edges.

I've attached a save from just before the Oracle is completed. Play a couple of turns and see if this works for you.

Thanks for the reply. The problem still occurs. It seems to be a problem with the sound? The videos work fine - the sound just keep skipping. Looks like I'll have to live with it until they release a patch!

If you're still having trouble, it means that your video card is overriding the setting in the Civ4 config and still performing Anti-Aliasing on the screen.

If you have an ATI card, one of these should help.

http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_7.html
http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_5.html

Alternatively, if it's an NVidia card in your machine, the answer will be somewhere in here

http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_1.html

In either case, you're looking to switch AA to "Application Preference." Things should work fine right away

I can vouch for Satis's fix, Downloaded his savegame, and viewed the Oracle vid with no stutter. (it works for me anyway) ....

1. Set AA to 'Appication Controlled' within windows (Rick click ATI/Nvidia icon by the clock, the settings there somewhere)

2. Load up Civ4, go to Options --> Graphics --> Set AA (Anti-Aliasing) to '0'

3. Important* Restart Civ4 (Fix doesn't work if you don't).

4. Load Statis' Savegame file/Restart Civ4

5. Et Voila! Woinder vids (should) play ok now.

I Did notice hoever, before trying this fix, that some video's stuttered more (Stonehenge only usually stuttered once for me, but others every couple of seconds) So I don't know if this will fix stutter later in the game, I will try it and get back to you all :)

Hope this helps!

I've checked graphics card setting which were already set to Application Controlled and Civ4 settings for Anti-Aliasing were already set to 0. I've also tried changing the graphical detail setting but this makes no noticeable difference.

The problem is not only with wonder movies but also with the sound on the video that shows the 2K and Firaxis logos when starting the game. Videos play fine just sound keeps cutting out.

Thanks for your help though - appreciated.

Hmm, odd...

What system specs do you have tris? soundcard in particular.

you may also want to d/l the bink player from http://www.radgametools.com/ I'm told it has a more up-to-date version than came with game.

I updated my motherboard (VIa Chipset) & soundcard (SBLive! Value) drivers as well as d/l the above, and none of them individually solved my problem, however the combination of them, as well as the fix described in this thread seem to do the trick.

Good luck :goodjob:

......... Just to report back, played through an entire game, and every wonder movie played without stutter, so this solution should work for you if you follow the advice in this thread :)

I tried the suggested fix, including restarting civ and setting the ATI settings to application controlle but to no avail unfortunetly! Thank you for your suggestion though!

No probs, hopefully the upcoming patch will fix the issue. Baleari, one more thing you could try (if you haven't already done so) is to update ALL of your system drivers Graphics, Sound, Mobo etc.. What system specs do you have?

PS. Baleati, I notice you're from the same City I'm from :D

Yep, I have tried all that. My graphics card and sound card drivers are up to date, as is DirectX, and all the windows patches are in place. Whats Mobo?

I am running this. 2.8 AMD Athlon, 1gb RAM, 9600 Radeon, Creative Labs Live! Value sound card.

By the way, I'm from Bristol, UK, your from Bristol, England. Completly different!
(just seeing if I can confuse our american friends a bit! ;) )

Hehe, Mobo is Motherboard/Mainboard :)

Strange it doesnt work tho, One other thing I just remembered I did was to use a proggy to clean the registry of obsolete programs (ie. when you uninstall a program it still leaves some stuff behind in the the registry - including drivers) cant remember where I D/L it from tho lol.

Also does your motherboard have onboard sound? If so, make sure its properly disabled, as it may conflict with your SB Soundcard (Although I'm pretty sure it's not the cause of the problem).

And what version of Windows are you running? XP? what Service Pack? (SP1/SP2)

Sorry 'bout the inquisition, but just trying to get a clearer picture :)

BTW: what area of Bristol? (Me = Cotham :goodjob: )

I use Systemworks to clean my registery quite often!

My "mobo" does have onboard sound, but I actually build computers and have managed to full turn this off in the BIOS.

I am using SP2 with all the relevent secruity downloads.

I think I might have to wait for the patch to get this one sorted out!

Thank you for your help though.

I live in Longwell Green near Hanham, however I am orginally from a town called Hessle in East Yorkshire (where the humber bridge comes into), my wife is from Keynsham, hence me been in cider country!

Aha.

It seems that anti-aliasing only affects in-game movies. I haven't seen anybody mention the title screens stuttering before.

On my system, it's the wonder movies and end sequence movies that don't work with AA. The opening logos are just fine under any setting.

First thing to do is make sure your video drivers are bang up to date:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

One of those, depending on your card.

Alternatively, the OMEGA drivers might be for you. These are unsupported drivers (not made by ATI or nVidia) and no one will take any responsibility if you kill your system with them. I use em cos I like the danger hehe.

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/

Alternatively, it might be your soundcard. Without knowing what you have inside, it's impossible to say where to point you. So, assuming you're running xp:

Go to My Computer, then under System Tasks on the left-hand side pick Change A Setting. This takes you into Control Panel. From here, double-click on the "system" icon. Then choose the "Hardware" tab and click on the "device manager" button.

Now we're where we want to be, we can get down to business. You should see a bunch of categories with + symbols next to them. You need to open up a few of these and note down what's inside.

First we need to know what video card you're running. Next to Display Adapters, click the + sign and make a note of everything that appears - there should be one or two, at most three entries. Write them all down to be on the safe side.

Then, open up "sound, video and game controllers" and note down the name of each entry. One of these will tell us what soundcard you're using. Post or pm the info to me and I'll see what I can find.

Alternatively, if you know the make/model of your soundcard, try googling it along with the word Driver.
