Hi. Let me begin by saying thank you to all the contributors of this site. It has been very helpful to me. I recently started playing again and it seems like I'm not getting the benefits of a couple great wonders.

1. The Great Library. I did receive a free tech early in the game. Now I'm close to the end of the middle ages and there are a couple techs that should be available to me but I'm not getting them.

2. The Great Lighthouse. All of a sudden, I don't have the benefit of moving the extra space. I'm still able to safely move in ocean squares.

Playing the original Civ III unpatched. Other than this, the game works very well. Should I have the patch and would I still be able to play the saves after patching? Would a reinstall help and if so can i keep saved games?

My apologies if this has been answered before in your forims.

Also apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.

The GLB will stop working, once you have learned Education.
The Great Lighthouse stops, once you learn Mag iirc. You should have gotten pop ups for each of these events.

There are significant issues that are corrected with the patches. Check the readme in 1.29f. No one can load the unpatched games here as they have 1.29f. Once you patch, you will not be able to load them either. May as well finish the game first.

It's not just the Great Library and Great Lighthouse. Check the 'pedia, you'll see that there are several ancient (and some medieval) wonders that become obsolete once you've researched particular technologies. They'll continue to generate culture, but you won't get any of their effects.

Most patches changed things that are not going to work. Not all patches will break the save, but nearly all did. I am sure that an unpatched save, will not work in a fully patch engine. You will get the famous dataio error.

hey all. thank you for response. Dangit, I shoulda known those went obsolete.

I'll get the patch and start over. I was in emperor and pretty much owning the planet. Need to try the next level.

vmxa, enjoyed reading your article. It really made me think about priorities. whats needed and whats not needed. The way i been playing, built just about every improvement in just about every city. heh thanks again. I'm sure I'll be asking for more advice. This game is fascinating.

Good to hear it was of value to you. The tech tree usually shows any wonders that goes obsolete, but the icons are not so easy to recognize.
