Chieftain
It's taken a while, but after playing 6 or 7 games over the last month I've finally won a game on Noble. Before this marathon of Civving I would play different leaders, different civs and just play casually - this is the first time I've looked through strategy guides, etc. I think I may have figured out that my 'best' leaders to use have Financial - I usually change around the leaders I use and this time I chose George Washington.
Sorry I don't have any Civ eye-candy but I'll get some screenshots up if anyone is interested.
Lately I've played the 'Tectonics' map on normal speed, standard size, I also like the Earth2.
Got a good start on a good-size continent with Charlemagne to my west and the Incans to my east and I waited until my capitol was size 4 or so to start expanding. When I watched the replay at the end of the game I saw that I started expanding at about the same time, so I've finally learned my lesson about expanding too early.
Our continent was on the very south, and with me being in the middle I wanted to split the land mass quick, so I expanded south first and then west.
I started trading as soon as I could for techs and goods and when I finally started exploring the oceans I saw why we didn't get many visits before - all the other civs (Greek, English, Vikings and Persians) were crammed onto one mega-continent with one large body and 2 smaller bodies connected to it. They'd been fighting back and forth for ages, with the English under Churchill being the bullies. The ocean to the north of me took up half the map!
Washington, New York and Boston (my only coastal city for a long while) started becoming my main production/wonder cities and eventually I found myself in clear second on the civ score listing. The Incans offered to be my vassals (which I'd never had before) but I needed to expand my civ to get more population so I pumped out some settlers and expanded everywhere I could, given tile restrictions and civ borders, so that got me a few more cities. But I had to expand even more to get firmly into first place, so I built up an army and while Charlie was still running around with trebuchet and musketmen I rolled over him with cannons and riflemen, eventually finishing him off with 2 great generals (can't believe I hadn't used these guys before) and a few stacks that eventually merged into 2 massive armies.
The Incans tried to capitalize on my efforts and even took a city that I'd weakened, but Charlie took it back before I paid more attention to it. I learned my lesson and with Charlie's capitol I let the Incans do the hard work and then rolled in. One of Charlie's major cities was taken over properly by an Incan army, but after the dust had settled they were completely surrounded by my borders so they asked to join my civ, which I allowed them to do
So I had 80% of the continent, the rest was taken up by a vassal and I kept building up my army to wipe the Incans out (I kept catching their spies, etc.) but I didn't think my rep would be very good if I took them out. So I just built up to keep everyone else away, which worked all the way to the end.
I had a massive points lead (800 or so, big to me) and when the space race started it was me and the Incans. I had way more production capacity so I would have won that way as well if I'd had maybe 15 more turns.
Now that the game is officially over I might start a land war with someone on the other continent (or start throwing nukes around and see what happens) but I'm anxious to see how I do in another game
Well thanks for letting me get all that out, I'm just pretty happy to have FINALLY won a BTS game! Again, if anyone wants I'll be happy to get some screenshots online.
