After years of droning away at Civ I finally thought about the concept of the worker animations. Why when a worker is building a road, is he digging? Is digging a process in building a road? Why isn;t he like laying done stones or something? What the hell does digging have to do with road building. And on PTW and C3C why do the slaves pound on a stick to build a mine?

Are these processes of the building technique that I have just never heard of? I'm sure someone must have asked this question before me.

I don't know,
so, let's ask WIKIPEDIA!
Wikipedia said:
Roads are built by removing vegetation (this may involve deforestation). The soil is tested to see if it will support weight and if not, a layer of soil is removed and replaced. The soil is compacted to form what is known as a "base course". On top of the base course is placed a wearing course which consists of asphalt or concrete. The main purpose of the wearing course is to prevent moisture from entering the road.
That's why :D

Okay. So thats one thing down. Now why in the slave pounding on a stick?

Perhaps some kind of Chizzel?

But I do agree with you that Worker animations should be made far more interesting, perhaps changing as the work process is closer to complettion.
I.e: Turn 1, the worker is digging the foundation of the road, turn 2 they are laying the surface of it.
For mines: The first few turns are spent hacking away at the surface, and a bout 1/2 way through the process a small shaft entrance appears and the worker diaapears into the mine untill they are finished. (Maby throuwing/carting up the odd bit of dirt and rock from time to time)

Meh. I just thought about it while typing up my turns on a succession game. It went something like "Shebobo begins working on road. Wait... What the Hell is he doing digging a road?"

As far as I can recall, (and I spent about 16 hours playing it yesterday!) they are using a pickaxe for the mine - sounds reasonable to me!

What really got me was when an enemy once captured one of my workers and he seemed to be counting and stacking what I assumed to be gold bricks... Obviously it's nice to be able to figure out what on earth the enemy workers are doing in your territory!

Turns out he was indeed stacking bricks... for a fort :)

@Zild
When you are playing PTW or C3C the slave workers pound away on a stick.

Maybe they don't trust slaves with any metal tools? :P

I'll have to keep a closer eye out for that this time...

Is it in the modern age that the workers finally get new uniforms? I'm certain I see some with union labels...

My favorite is the settler unit. Do they ever change? Do they always retain that curious loping walk, and that sack on their back?

I just love the sound of that stick plonking down when they found a new city...

I think the settler eventualy gets a new hat, (It looks kind of Amish) and the workers put cotton shirts on. That's about the only change in appearance I've ever noticed.

one thing that I found weird was the fact that workers moden shovels from the start of the game  then after the invention of Replaceble parts they are stil using those @%*$ shovels, shoulden't they be using pneumatic drills or something ;)
