Question for Civ mechanics experts - how is World Era determined? I am under the impression eras last a minimum of 40 turns and after that advance once either half or (maybe it’s the majority) of Civs hit the next era. However I do not now the fine details.

My questions are:

Are eliminated Civs removed from the average? For example if you had 8 Civs and 3 were in Industrial and 5 in Renaissance, would wiping out 2 of the laggers trigger the 10 turns to era advance message?

Does teching further past the next era matter? For example if 3 Civs were in Modern Era and 5 in Renaissance, would that trigger advance to Industrial? If works era is based on “average era” if all Civs this would make sense.

Apologies if this is already posted elsewhere but I could not find it.

IIRC, eras are an approximation of the progress all civ's are making. After a certain number of techs or civics are unlocked, the countdown starts.

You might notice that at the bottom of the civic and tech trees you can see the overall progress of all civ's you've met.

Never liked every civ being shoehorned into the same era. The fact Europeans started building castles and adopting padded yokes didn't lead to a sudden change of priorities in SE Asia or Peru.

Well, the game does try to deal with that by letting Civ be in their own era even as the world era is ahead or behind. That kind of makes sense as in the real world some civilizations had writing / metal working / agriculture long before others (and sometimes in different combinations). That part is fine, the main frustration is when you already have Spaceports and can still only recruit Renaissance Great People because the AI is so slow on low difficulty or the hard limit of 40 turns comes into play on high difficulty.

The real reason I ask is that in a longer game you may want to advance the era faster, for example in the current Diplomatic GOTM you would want the World Congress to come online ASAP and also get to Industrial Era so Nobel Prize competitions can run (game is as Sweden). I was trying to decide whether it might make sense, despite the game being Diplomatic, to just wipe out all the AIs on my continent. In theory that could advance the Era quicker especially if I wipe out the ones lagging in science/culture - lets say I am in Renaissance and there are 2 Renaissance AI and 5 Medieval AI - I *think* wiping out 3 of the laggers should advance the era but have not tested.

Worst case at least there will be less people to vote against me.
