World Map Problem

I am currently playing a PBEM with another player. Both of us have made contact with other civs, and neither of us have traded world or territory maps with anyone else, for the sake of secrecy.

Yet, upon discussing the game with my friend the other player, it turns out somehow we have both got access to each others world maps and can see everything, via trading with the non-player civs.

Surely this shouldn't be happening?!?

Can anyone explain what is going on? Is it a bug? It probably is going to alter the game a lot!

If the AI sent units through your territory before you settled it they will trade it around.

Also when an embassy is established your capital's 21 tiles are revealed.

Between the 2 methods it is not unusual for the AI to have all your territory known....
