Ok so the AI in this game is...kind of passive and sad

The barbarians on the other hand are agressive and active

So has anyone tried this experiment?

Set city states to zero

Set number of civilizations to 1 (you)

Barbarian clans OFF

You should get a world full of enemies right?

Good to know it wasn't just me re: barbarians seeming to be more aggressive.

Ya same here. I played a few older civ titles recently and the AI is way way more aggressive

Maybe I need to denounce and dsclare war as soon as I meet them?

Isn't it impossible to set number of Civs to 1? I thought you always needed to have at least 1 opponent? There used to be a mod that allowed you to play without any civs, and I did that quite sometimes to just have a relaxing building game. If I added barbs, it quickly became an onslaught. You couldn't really venture out with a lone unit, you needed a whole army to scout the map (was quite cool actually).

Barbarians and Zombies pale towards...Free Cities  Honestly, not long ago in a patch their tendency to crank out workers was reduced...and they probably still manage to improve the land around their cities better then a usual AI, especially when it comes to connecting luxuries (which even lead to some AIs suddenly setting up industries in one of my games, because of capturing or loyalty flipping a free city with improved ressources). And they never run out of units they throw at you... For my taste that is one of the interesting twists the DA mode and thinking more about it, a game specially set up to fight a huge-free-city-empire as challenge could be fun - it would be probably my personal favourite "zombie defense style"-game.

I thought about that, but I find the All Or Nothing era score manipulations to be far far too gamey.

I legit don’t get why the actual civs are so pathetically passive, and it seems to get worse with each update

Maybe we just need a mod that gives the AI the Free City Build Priorities

Or just go back to the 90’s and straight up give them free units
