Fired up the Europe map just to see what it was like, and this is the start I got:

The Americans are not supposed to be in europe map anyway :P

What part of Europe is that? The urals?

Best to settle in place.

1W is clearly better, since you can't work the desert anyhow.

That's the Tibetan Plateau. You might have some spices and incense to the south but that's about it. The Chinese will block you in about 20 turns. The Indians and the Mongols and the Indian will pressure you from the southwest and north respectively. You're best just to become a Chinese vassal right now. You're done for.

I thought he said he fired up a "Europe map". :D

I agree. You should migrate. Few lost turns is not the end of the world. Let us know how it went.

or...

Settle in place then beeline to Machinery and windmills... :D

pakZ: that's actually a lot more doable than you think. Most people get sailing and bronze working with their initial 8 commerce in the palace pretty quickly anyway. Then you whip out fishing boats, a warrior, a galley and a settler, and you're set. It's really just about as bad as a deep arctic start.

The hill start: America starts with hunting, research archery, and build warriors and archers. If it's a low-enough difficulty level, take out someone's capital, and you're set. But yeah, you're pretty screwed there. But hey, if you try bronze working or animal husbandary, you might find them in your fat cross or even under your city!!!!

The flood plains start: yeah you are COMPLETELY screwed.

Speaking of being totally screwed: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=249615

Haha, horrible start. Imagine if the mountains had corn or pigs behind them, and you were blocked from getting to them ;)

I've attached the save if anyone wants to take a crack at it. The good news is that it is only Monarch. They bad news is...

Spoiler :
...there doesn't seem to be any fresh water. Anywere. I found coast to the north (which is where I settled), but there are no rivers. No lakes. Nada. I'm guessing this is north Africa.

Well, you get an extra hammer in the city tile from settling on a plains hill and since that city isn't going to grow past size 1, I wouldn't worry too much about having a few unworkable tiles.

The flood plains start is not so bad. You can easily whip early units and buildings, then found cities elsewhere that have good production. The first city will be a science and great people city and later in the game with workshops and temples+AP it can have enough production to build at least all the science buildings.

edit: Oh, well, it doesn't grow. Now that's a problem :mischief:

The flood plains start is great. Just move your settler to reduce the number of floodplains to a manageable number. Instead of one city with all floodplains you could have three with 6 or so each.

That picture of the city screen with the city is surrounded by floodplains is hilarious.
