Wotm 19?

Very much looking forward to the next WOTM. WOTM18 was one of the best games of the series. :)

WOTM 19 will happen. Thrallia is away until the end of the month, which is causing a bit of a delay. :(

How about 1 or a few starting units and no Settler, you have to capture a city to build more. I'm not sure such a thing is even possible? You also get whatever leader's traits whose city you capture.

Start with a capital city already settled, but in a bad place (IE no bonus resources in the fat cross).

Our city is a holy city and has an ancient wonder of the world in it already (ie Pyramids).

Editing the map with mountains and inland seas to block off some parts and create choke points is good too.

If you want to speculate : In principle, we can do anything that can be done in worldbuilder to the initial map. So for example, map tiles can be changed, units can be moved, added or removed, techs can be assigned, cities can be placed and populated etc. (Or we could pre-play some turns to force a certain opening). However we cannot do anything that changes the rules of the game (eg. change stats for a unit) - which means it'd be impossible to have variable leader's traits.

My own feeling is forcing people to capture a city would detract from the competition, since it'd mean your first city is based largely on chance (where the AI placed it, and which direction you went exploring in first, hence which city you captured) rather than on your skill on choosing a good city location. After that there'd be little difference from a normal game.

OCC. Human completely surrounded by mountains.
How tight a surround do you have in mind? Do you mean OTC (one TILE challenge?) I guess you would be safe from conquest (until paratroops?), and once your culture expands, you could be found by AI, for trading (good luck with that!)

I guess the one tile might need to have one of every resource on it ...

Any takers? :mischief:

Out of interest, since the topic seems to have arisen, do people feel they would like to occasionally have games that have heavily altered, eg. to the extent typically seen in SGOTMs? Obviously, we do edit maps in the GOTMs, but so far always within the constraints that what we release is a fairly conventional civ game. We've tended to regard variants such as one-city-challenge or city-already-settled as being too far different from a normal civ game to consider using in XOTMs. OTOH if a fair number of people would like such games to happen occasionally, I'm sure I could create a few. (It would only be occasionally as otherwise I don't think it'd be fair on new people coming to the GOTMs).

I just got Warlords - brand new haven't even opened the box yet. I am looking forward to participating in wotm 19, whenever it happens. I'd like to see a fairly standard game, but that's only because I'm a noob. So if everyone wants altered, it's ok with me. I'm just happy to play.

I would like to have such altered games from time to time.

Not too often, and not every WOTM!; but some 'special' games would be funny IMHO!

Every other month for an altered game with a regular game on regular months. That means no Civ down time.

A life? Who needs a life when theirs civ to be played?

I'd like an unusual altered game every now and then. With the gotm, wotm and botm all running, something like 1 game every 2 months (1 in 5 games) would be good.

Yes, I'd be up for an altered game occasionally. The SGOTM variations have been interesting and creative, and I'd be up for giving something like that a go in solo mode as well.

I would be keen for another Emperor+ level game as well (maybe Immortal this time - to let us put our recent deity-honed skills into practice with less risk of the arbitrary early DOW?) Or I would be up for another unaltered deity game as well.
