Writing advice thread

There should really be a thread that helps writers writ. I think our stories, with their combination of gameplay and story, are an art-form in and of themselves, and as such, require unique advice on how to make it good.

I'll start. I've been looking on how to make a good After Action Report, and people advise on forums and the like to play ahead a little bit, so the story fits into a neat historical narrative.
