WW1:- If you were a command of an army in the western Front ...

Late in WWI, the German Stormtrooper appeared.

The Stormtrooper was a fast runner stripped of heavy equipment like backpacks, shovels and canteens. He carried pistols, bayonetted rifles, lots of grenades and/or flamethrowers. Not much else. The least amount of weight possible.

The idea was to dash across no-man's land during the artillery bombardment at breakneck speed, rush right into the Allied trenches and wreak havoc.

While all hell was breaking loose in the Allied trenchlines, the German infantry would come across no-man's land and consolidate the advance.

At least that was the idea. Crude but effective.

You could almost look at the Stormtrooper as the forerunner to the armored blitz. It was very successful for awhile. The problem was the German shortage of manpower in late 1917 and early 1918. They couldnt field enough of them and survivability was quite low.

As mentioned by so many posters already, there was very little you could do in that day and age to break the static line. The Stormtrooper was probably the most effective at the time.

Commander in A WWI west front:

1) defense is my ally, attack is suicide. I sit in my trench and wait for the other guy to attack.
2) use my otherwise useless cavalry as a mobile reserve and use them to counterattack at any area that is broken through. The cavalry should be effective because the attacking force in WWI would not have MG s set up to defeat the cavalry charge.
3) infiltrate at night and try to take out as many enemy leaders as I could.
4) Shell the livin hell out of 'em
5) Play cards and wait for the war to end.

What other options do you have?
