Is the difference that one is the coastguard (they were important for spotting japanese ship movement) and the other is the regular army?

AoA, You're correct on Q3 MacArthur left the Phillipines on PT boats and transferred to a B17 on Mindanao. :goodjob:

Correct on all others answered.

Q8. I am referring specifically to the Pacific theatre, not China etc.

Q10 looks like it might be to difficult for non-Aussies - I'll give people more time on that and a clue, the difference was in the title of the units and the way they were raised.

So you want ANOTHER DIFFERENCE!

Way they were raised...hmm

One lot was drafted the other lot volunteered...guess for name of Aussies = "The Bonehead Brigade"...message ends :p

Apart from your attempt at humour, you are correct about the way they were raised. The AIF (Australian Imperial Force) was an all volunteer force that could potentially serve anywhere in the world and were considered the elite troops. The Milita forces were raise by largely by draft to serve in defence of Australia, however the Australian government changed the definition of what constituted the defence of Australia allowing them to be deployed in Papua New Guinea.

Still waiting for a correct answer to Q8. Clue involves the defeat of a Japanese landing force, but not Guadalcanal. :)

If it's the Pacific war, I think Kitten gave the correct answer, Wake Island.

I still think the engagement I'm talking about was the first land victory over the Japanese in the Pacific - the date I'm referring to was August 26 - 6 September '42 - however if someone can demonstrate otherwise......

The answer to:

Q8. Where were Japanese land forces first defeated in the Pacific and by whom?

Milne Bay which is on the southeast coast of Papua New Guinea - battle took place between 26 Aug' and 6 Sept' '42.

The Japanese attempted a two pronged assault on Port Moresby, one over the Owen Stanley Ranges along the Kokoda Trail and the other a seaborne attack on Milne Bay which was defeated by Australian units - the Japanese wanted the airfield that was under construction at Milne Bay.

No, not mustangs, but you're on the right track. ;)

Good guess you're correct. The Australian Government was prepared to abandon northern Australia above Brisbane in it's plan to defend Australia.

"10. What were the nicknames given to the American bombers that dropped the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki?"

Big Boy?

No, you are getting mixed up with the names of the bombs which were 'Little Boy' on Hiroshima and 'Fat Man' on Nagasaki.

Keep trying! :goodjob:
