XFire Chat with Firaxis

I imagine XFire will attempt to make one. The whole thing was a little disorganized or at least light toned, I think what I've quoted here are the highlights.

We can also expect a new Sim City to be coming out. And it sounds like Civilization 5 will definetly be a possiblility, although not neccessarily anytime soon.

sorry, that was a joke... we have nothing to do with SimCity. It's an EA IP. (just struck me as funny that we were being asked about it as we are now owned by Take2...)

Hehe. I was slightly confused when I saw that!

Thanks Player0 for reporting (and thanks Firaxians for answering questions). I'm also happy to see that there will be offical memory reduction come the next patch!

Hey Soren, you mentioned that differentiating of-and conflict between-religions might be seen as 'controversial', but what if you tied the differentiation and conflict more to player choices, rather than any trait inherent to the historical religions? That way, the 'vanilla' form of each religion are still effectively neutral, but players can opt to select specific 'features' for their religion as they go along (like observances, attitudes to other religions, that kind of thing). I am already planning on doing something along these lines-in a modest way-using the religion civics, by introducing such things as Pantheism, Militancy, Fundamentalism, Orthodoxy and Reformism-alongside the existing Pacifism, Free Religions and Organised Religions traits. I just don't think you should let fear of 'controversy' keep you guys from implementing great ideas which are relevent to history-particularly in an expansion pack ;).

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

I totallly agree :

Animistic Pantheism is much more credible in 4000 BC than Meditation & Buddhism.

Buddhism isnt even really a religion. It's more a way of life.

Here are a few other juicy tidbits from our chat today:

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: Is there any hidden things you put in there as inside
jokes to each other? -- Small, tiny things. We were here late one night, and I was working with Nick Rusko on the Supermarket building. When he wasn't looking, I changed the name on the sign to Rusko's

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: *pushes glasses up on nose and giggles*

[Civ IV] Mustafa Thamer: Another hidden thing - there is a cheatcode that is based on a nearby food joint...

A few more:

[Civ IV] Barry Caudill: are you going to sponsor any multiplayer tournements? Yes :-) Keep an eye on the Civ IV page

[Civ IV] Barry Caudill: If you had a limitless supply of resources what would be a general upgrade for the next civ game, Graphics, Realism, Famous Voices? SHATNER!!!!

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: what seperates civ 4 from other games? - The Box. There are no other games shipped on the CD with it...

[Civ IV] Soren Johnson: Whats your favourite Civ to play as? Indians... I like the Fast Worker. :)

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: What is your favourite Civ to play as? Japanese. Hands down. Samurai. Nuff said.

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: Have any of you actually seen this so called "Sid Meier"? - [response deleted by MEIERbot]

[Civ IV] Soren Johnson: Are You Planning To Make A Civ 5? If you guys want it!

[Civ IV] Mustafa Thamer: Regarding memory leaks that were overlooked... Civ was extensively tested and we would have never shipped the game if we knew of any crash or leak issues. What most people call a memory leak is really the game simply taking up additional resources as it progresses. However, we were able to make signifcant reductions in memory usage which will be available in the next patch (in final testng now). This should improve performance and stability for low-end machines.

[Civ IV] Barry Caudill: How many of you have ever beat the game on Diety? - Soren IS deity difficulty...and I've never beaten him

[Civ IV] Barry Caudill: : If Civilization were to be a Online RPG like Everquest and World of Warcraft, what features would it have? - CONSTANT LEVELING!!!

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: If Civilization were to be a Online RPG like Everquest and World of Warcraft, what features would it have? - A geeky Level 64 Mage who would wipe out other civs

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: What kind of computers do you use? - PCs
[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: However, we do allow Macs here
[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: For, you know, the music guys and such
[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: *ahem*

[Civ IV] Barry Caudill: Did the original civ. really save someones life? - I don't know but it's runied a lot of marriages

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: How close is Civ IV to the Civilization Board Game - depends on how close you put them on the shelves...
uatgprogrammer has left the room.

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: We will have your babies play Civ

[Civ IV] Soren Johnson: Is combat any better in Civ 4? In the other Civs a Bowman could kill a tank, to me that is really unrealistic and stupid. I also felt that combat was to simplistic, is that improved at all? Civ4 uses a form of firepower from Civ2 where stronger units hit for more hit points, so older units are less lilkely to win. In the next patch, we will also be showing exact combat odds (thanks to some help for DeepO, a fan) so that people can anticapate combat better. Combat in Civ4 is a lot more complex due to the promotions and unit-vs-unit bonuses

[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: Moose likes grappling. I've seen him put large muscle bound men on their keisters. Don't mess with him.
[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: And Barry's a brown belt. You don't want to argue with a Producer who knows how to kick tail.
[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: Hoo HA.

[Civ IV] Barry Caudill: If you could have any state become a country in which you are a leader which would you choose? - State of consciousness
[Civ IV] Steve Ogden: If you could have any state become a country in which you are a leader which would you choose? - I'd choose Ogland, the little known state in New England. I'd call it Ogtopia, and there would be musical instruments, wine, and big fun for ALL.

[Civ IV] Soren Johnson: What would you add in an expansion? we've got a survey up on firaxis.com right now about it... we're certainly looking at new civs/leaders, sp and mp scenarios, some new features...

[Civ IV] Soren Johnson: Would you ever change the way the religion system works? Perhaps make individual religions more unique or create a downsidwe to having multiple religions in each city? It's tempting, but probably too controversial...

Civ IV] Soren Johnson: s the PTBS server still in development, if so any ETA and can we have some titbits on what we can expect specs etc? We hope to get it out soon. System specs should be low since it does consume any graphics at all...

Hey Soren, I'm not sure how much you guys got to see, but I asked Xfyre to pass on some thanks from everyone involved in the Q&A and all those who have been playing and enjoying the Civilization series from all over to yourselves and the rest of the development team.

I'm glad you guys were able to answer some serious questions as well as have some fun and it was entertaining and enjoyable to have the chance to talk with you guys.

Once again, thanks from all of us and keep up the great work.

Need to go play one more turn as the Incans before I go to bed...

Hi folks,

Was this chat captured on audio or video anywhere? Pardon me if already said.

CIV 4 ROCKS! :spear:

It was done in an XFire chatroom set up by the XFire staff. I'd imagine they're working to edit and format a copy of the Q&A session to be shared.

Who is DeepO and why does he deserve a special mention? (And Harkonnen doesn't).

He is a guy (over at 'poly mainly) who has worked with Firaxis for years (for free) and (among other things) put an accurate combat odds calculator in the next patch.

Why not Harkonnen? Because they already had duplicated his efforts and went beyond them and aren't including his mod on the next patch.
