Just wondering...

I have two PCs; one with XP and one win 98 (first ed - could have sworn it was SE :hmm: )

Anyway, I'm considering upgading the second one to XP (new motherboard has drivers that are not Win 98 vanilla compatable).

Problem is, I don't have a modem in the second PC. IIRC, you need a modem to install XP, as it is used to activate (register XP). Is that correct?

No, you can register over the phone and they will give you a number to insert and you can put that in and activate it.

I have to mention however. If you have only one copy of XP with only one key, then you cannot install XP on the second computer without another key. XP Pro and Home only can be installed on one computer unless you have the corporate version.

And if you have a cracked key, then I do not reccommend even attempting to activate XP over the phone because they will know.

But if you're all good and have a seperate key to work with, then you can safely register XP over the phone.

Or perhaps if you upgraded your old computer and want to tell them that you can't register XP because your hardware is different and it's not accepting your key, then call them, and have them issue you a new key with the hash number that's on your computer, thus allowing you to have a valid key - but then your other key becomes obsolete.

That's pretty-mcuh what I though :(

I have legit copies of DOS (5, 6.0 and 6.2), Win 95, Win 98, Win ME and Win XP with two PCs - not really into pirating software.

Unfortunately, my new PC can't run win 98, due to the motherboard. Win ME came with a new PC, on a hidden partition, so it will be somewhat difficult to roll it back (ie remove XP and go back to ME). Although if someone can tell me how, I'd appreciate it...

I am pretty pi$$ed that win 98 was half-arsed, and then they made you pay for Win 98 SE, rather than just releasing it as a patch.

I guess at this stage, I may have to buy yet another OS.....

P.S. - At the moment we only have a cellphone, so even to call M$ will mean approx. $1 / minute to be on hold....

I think it was automatic when I did it, the internet registration didn't work for some reason:)
