Xp problems

My friend has Xp and she has a problem, the computer keeps creating multiple devices so the hd's and all the other stuff gets duplicated. this is preventing her from surfing the web. now i cant offer much more than the fact that she has xp home sp 2

sounds like a virus to me, id get a copy of Linux and use it to check. It doesnt have to be installed, KNOPPIX is a live cd and u can use it to jump online and do a online virus scan. Id try that.

But its windows, could be anything.

Not exactly sure if that'd be a virus or not. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do their free scan just to be sure.

Switch to Linux, you will not get any viruses!!

Then again I would probably say the same thing, because that is a very strange thing.

Can you Uninstall the devices in Device Manager and reboot? It should say "Found New Hardware" on the next restart and everything should be back to normal.
