Continents, Pangea, and Pangea Plus:
All 3 types minimize the amount of water that AI land units have to embark over, which the AI is notoriously bad at as the AI often allows large numbers of units to be attacked from my ranged units on shore rather than using naval its units to provide cover. Yet all 3 types still include enough water.
Continents is probably the most fair map to the AIs: Spain, Indonesia, and naval civs can use their uniques, while land civs can use theirs fairly well insofar as they can attack whoever is on their continent, at least, without having to embark.
Pangea is the best for avoiding silly embarked AI units getting slaughtered, and still allows some coast, but on Pangea I start to see some naval AIs (England) rush Great Lighthouse when they really won't need it (often because Attila or Genghis Khan is knocking on the door with land forces).
Pangea Plus is nice to open up extra space when playing Pangea. Since BNW, it seems the AI is more apt to settle much further afield than before, often putting cities in areas where I'd settle just my third city. On Pangea Plus, I have a little more room with the CSes either on the fringe of the Pangea or on islands just off of it, and the problem isn't so bad. I don't mind conquering for cities early on in most cases (at least on Emperor and Immortal...), but in BNW it seems that AIs are settling in silly places now, and I'd rather not have to raze or puppet just to get my third (sometimes, second) city up. Forth city, okay, especially since by then my borders should be near theirs anyways. But taking my third city from an AI that settled 15 tiles from it's closest border is absurd. And Pangea Plus allows me to just settle somewhere else when this happens in BNW.
