The AI is the first to build fortresses in the Antartica region. It's truly wonder of the world! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0>

They all say the AI is stupid, but I know better. When the penguins kill everyone but the computer because it was so well fortified, I'll be laughing...
Thanks Anthony Coulter for submitting the pic.

Wow!

So that means that the AI knows about the polar strategy (see here ) !!!

Ooops! sorry; I don't know how I came to post this twice!

The AI is still stupid.
No reason to burn the time building forts to excess as shown.

The poles are really great!

If you succede in colonising the poles quite you have won the game!

Thinking about it, you are right! A railway around Earth can reach ANY destination!! If each polar base is supplied with several transport, the troops can move from continent to continent all within 4-5 turns!

I think that "Polar Strategies" as we define them as player involves putting actual CITIES on the polar squares. Looking at the picture, it just seems that the AI has a few random units out there by fortifications. With the movement rate of tundras, it would take way too many turns for those units to get to any city to help defend. And you just know that they are moving those units back and forth incessantly. Duh.

If the idea is that it will block a land attack that comes via the antarctic - well it just seems like a lot of trouble to defend against what is a pretty stupid attack route in the first place (without rail lines). Leave it to the AI to worry about this (since I've had games where they've tried that very attack route).

I'm sorry, in a game going for high scores I will settle on the arctic and anarctic poles when I've filled the regualr land, but it has never been a huge priority for me. Just usually not enough land masses in my games are connected to the poles making them less than primary real estate strategically.

I understand that in multi-player games building on the poles can provide an element of surprise at times however

Having isolated polar cities is good, in that you can ship units more under cover.

I think you'd run into problems having your main colony on the pole.
Yeah, some game whale, and ivory scatterd throughout, but glacier terrain yields zip.

Hm... I think we all missed the point here.

The AI is *not* using a polar strategy. You guys took that way too seriously.

The AI naturally builds fortresses every three or four spaces between cities. It had cities on three continents touching the south pole, so it naturally linked Antarctica.

Building railroads down there is not in the AI's best interest. It is now a century or two later, but I can assure you all that its archers are no match for my howitzer force...

Actually I meant the opposite when I say the AI is very smart.

The AI is really very STUPID.

No, I understand that Thunderfall was being sarcastic, but the rest of you guys... It started off with a joke about the polar strategy, but then *became* an arguent over the polar strategy. You guys need to lighten up. We're insulting the AI here, not talking about polar strats.

It' just like that with some people they don't understand a joke. You should have posted it in the Humor section

so that veryone chould understand that it was a joke.

I think that most understood that it was a joke. It's just that as fanatics, some conversations tend to evolve into actual discussions as quickly as some de-evolve into silliness.

Perhaps in Civ III we will see an Eskimo civ and they will rule the tundras with fast-moving dog sleds and trained polar bears.
