I'd gun for bronze working ASAP. If no copper, go for iron working.

Does that mean you go IW immediately after BW? I thought about that but it requires so many hammers you might stall your growth too much. You don't wait until writing etc?

With Jaguars , you dont need copper or iron , the can be built resource free .

How soon should you be building jaguars? I always get the timing wrong. 2nd city, 3rd? I read 2nd a lot but production is so slow that way.

it not only works, but is also fun. you play in a very montezuma style. you'll note that it's not even exactly a rush since it takes more time then the approach people are suggesting, but it's more like a heavily whip based very early war.

Nah, the game went fine!
Research to IW was a little slow as I was focusing on production for some defense, but once I was able to set up a perimeter and pillage his copper, he went down pretty quickly.

What if you don't have copper or iron? Anywhere?

I just gave up on an emperor game as Ragnar. Everything went bad. The map was

- randomscriptmap, I was on a small continent with shaka (~12 tiles away) and kublai
- jungle belt where my expansion would go
- no copper, no iron
- horses 9 or so tiles away

Is this winnable? I have the initial save even though I've spoiled it. My horse archers were quickly put down by his impis. I couldn't really stall him until I had superior tech either.

In theory, Archers/hills/walls can hold off his melee and your Horse Archers can flank his Cats when he gets them. You can also use the trick of getting at least a respite by founding a junk city and trading it to him for peace.

Is flanking really efficient as means of countering siege? I always had trouble with this particular situation, would be interested in some expert oppinions...

Definitly do not re roll the map. Wage war all the way, just for the heck of it!
