[GS] Your first Gathering Storm game

Turn 4 flood, got some really nice fertilized tiles. Also playing as Eqypt who is immune to flood damage, however that does't really matter at the moment.

My first game was Mansa Musa on standard continents map. I believe I put it arid and hot, but my desert wasn't all that big. Even more, the AI apparently didn't have enough desert to seriously compete with me for Pyramids or Petra (I got both). I barely managed to snag a religion which I named Greed is Good. Sweden was very persistent in spreading her religion and I had to spend a lot of faith on inquisitors (which only seem to eliminate small chunks of heresy now instead of all of it).

Sandstorm after sandstorm hit my civilization in the Sahara desert, but eventually they stopped long enough I could stop repairing my districts all the time. I wasn't sure of my victory method I would go for, but I figure I want to finish the game sooner rather than later, so cultural it is. I figure I can buy my way to cultural victory. I bought as many cultural works and relics as I had room for. The ai was more than willing to sell them. No price was too high for me to house the worlds greatest art and relics. Mansa must have it all.

I did build 2 national parks, but I was so reluctant to get rid of my awesome mines. I did get rid of a few mines for my national parks. But when rock bands came online, that was the way of the future. Screw protecting the environment, let's rock out. My initial trio of rock bands were Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden. Anthrax was my only band that survived until the end.

I did manage to flip 2 Eleanor cities with indie rock bands. One was called The Ramones. I flipped her capital which she eventually got back (I wanted to put her behind in culture generation), and flipped a city on her border which flipped to me (even though we were cultural allies).

My closest neighbor to the south was Eleanor. And I wisely kept cultural alliance with her all game. Had I got rid of it, my best city would have flipped almost instantly (like -16 a turn).

Who says you can't buy culture?

I haven’t had great luck with maps, so I have only played Ancient Era on a handful of games. However, I am impressed with what I see. The animation and graphics are great, and I like a lot of the changes to mechanics. So far, I have tried Inca (these guys are powerhouses again), Mali (production hit isn’t terrible for early units), Ottomans, and Phoenicia.

While my starting locations were technically near a few desert and mountain tile for both Mali and Inca, there wasn’t enough on my maps to make a go of it. Map-dependent civs really need those tiles to make them worth it.

The rest seems great, so far. Looking forward to playing more, and I want to try the Dark Ages scensrio once I have had time with base game. The best thing I’ve seen so far is Mt. Vesuvius, standing alone in some grasslands, erupting. It was really pretty to watch, and the noise it makes is incredible. I am amazed a civ game can do this now!

Started a game as Inca (all that mountain play is fairly fun), but the AI either bugged out or Firaxis really messed it up this time. The AI opponents don't seem to build settlers. Its turn 150 and my neighbours have 3 cities. My next neighbour actually marched their settler all across the continent to the other side and settled between three city states near iron (there was iron just next to him near the coast). Go figure. I am restarting now since its a bit too boring.

Started a game after coming home from a 13 hours work day just to try a little bit. Picked Maori, everything standard, upped natural disasters to max, and difficulty level King just to ease into it.

Ca turn 20 after some exploring, misclicked while moving my settler. Barbarian scout took it. Game over  Well at least I'll never forget my first game of GS!

It took me only 4 turns. Sent my Settler and Warrior is opposite directions. As soon as I put my settler on land - clicked next turn and an unseen scout suddenly took me out.

I played as Canada on Diety, Continents, Epic speed .... lost to Inca Science Victory. I had 8 diplomatic points and just 2 turns before world congress session where I hoped to gain 2 more for the win, Inca won --- probably just 1 or 2 turns in front of Nubia because Nubia was leading but Inca space ship traveled 5 light years while Nubia just 2 (they jump in front them probably last turn).

I continue 2 more turns to see would I be able to gain Diplomatic victory and NO, they almost all voted for me to lose one diplomatic victory point (option B) while I put all I had (12 votes) to 2 VP for me.

I was suprised by AI, I think its is clearly improved. They were aware all the time about vicotory conditions and how to stop others to win while push themself towars the end.

GDR of course was build by AI and Nubia attack USA , took one city and probably would destroy whole Civ if Victory wasnt achived.

Played Phoenicia till I finished a World Congress vote. It was weird because there was only one continent before Cartography and no barbarians the entire time. I basically went to acquire resources and then traded them for Diplomatic Favor. Gave myself culture bombs on districts.

I'm moving on to Cleopatra with disasters at 4.

Edit: In my second game, I got hammered by barbarians. I'm leaning towards disasters at 4 being more the default.

I decided to play as English Eleanor
Currently in the indistrial era playing on emperor

Have some great land with a nice mountain range , a volcano that erupted 5 times the first 100 turns and has added a lot of yields. Last eruption was heavy though
4 pop lost (spread over 2 cities)
4 tiles damaged including 2 districts

I’ve accumulated a lot of great works and as from the renaissance era I started to flip Japanese cities even though he’s in a golden age too

A lot of city states are on 1 island and I had first meet on all of them so now I’m suzerain of about 10 city states with Kilwa wonder

Maps look great I think.
Also notice a lot of wonders were still available. I was able to build Chichen Itza (I think first time ever on difficulty above king), pyramids, Potala palace, Colossos, Apedana, Kilwa

Well I started out as Mali with no desert tiles in sight, but I settled anyway. The capital had a river and mountains so I was able to get a nice campus along with a suguba and holy site.
I went west and found a little desert and floodplains with a few hills and silver and thought it would be nice to settle there. Once I got a scout and went east there was even a bigger desert with a lot of silver next to an oasis.
I then decided to go there and as a result a little further I discovered the eye of the Sahara.
I ended up settling those 4 city spots and I also got desert folklore pantheon in the meantime.
The first spot ended up having both iron and horses so I definitely ended up going there but the others were a priority.
The oasis city I ended up with Petra and every tile in that city is desert.
At the eye of the Sahara city I got an 8 adjacency bonus for a holy site and that's without the suguba yet and the govt. plaza which I eventually built.
That city was also near a lone mountain tile right near the border of Pachacuti and he got angry and then declared a surprise war on me when I didn't have that much of a military and he quickly took the city.
I rushed archers and warriors and managed to get the city back.
I also have become friendly with England Eleanor who is to the east of it and hopefully will make a cultural alliance with her.

Large Island plates map, low sea level, immortal with Dido

Diplo victory, late (turn 300ish). I had 7 points, kept Seasteads untrained thinking I might fool the AI. WC vote was 23 to 20 in my favor

Flood barriers are pretty cheap, and I faith bought them (Valetta I think). had a thousand year flood in a city I considered building a dam in. Got 2g per turn from each AI as aid. Thanks.

13 cities, 12 with Cothons (and one with a commercial hub). Had 19 trade routes by end of game. Was in the 500 gpt range by midgame so I just bought my way to good land and inspirations.

Settled 2 quickly, took a city state with 3 Biremes, then figured I had time to set up magnus rank 2 with the gov plaza building. I did.

Had 5 alliances and 6 or so suzerains throughout the game. I didn't actively try to trade for diplo favor, but I happily took it whenever the Ai wanted to trade it for resources.

Germany tried forward settling me in the mid game and I bought tiles right up to his door when I saw his settle location. Plopped an aerodrome there. Dumbass tried a surprise war with no answer for the three planes parked there for my prior inspiration. Not to mention my 5 other allies. Was nice to be target of surprise war, take a city as punishment, and have the other AIs all cool with me.

Don't like diplo victory overall. Needs to be more ways to earn points I think. Global warming mechanic feels like something that just happens. it happens WAY too fast and has a fairly small, and mostly avoided, impact.

However, love the disasters. They are good risk vs reward, and a trigger for potential DV points as well in a pretty natural synergy.
Strategic resources late game are brutal. I like the system overall.
Governor reworks are solid.

One weird thing with diplo favor is getting rewarded for doing things you aren't supposed to do. Take someone's artifact? Get 30 DF to say it was a misunderstanding. then go do it to every civ (well I cant be bothered to game it lake that, but I did get it from a couple)

On Island plates, Cothons are strong. Biremes were able to take a city state with water on 3 sides, but don't think they'll be super useful. Not a huge fan of the melee ships compared to ranged ships. Didn't make much use out of loyalty or capitol move mechanics. For the game I played, Engleanor would have probably been better. Dido is better to do naval domination to take advantage of the loyalty. Which I actually intended to do but didn't want to disrupt the peace.

Looking forward to another game

The Ottomans are pissing me off taking my city-states, even though we're declared friends.
Also I'm playing Hungary, so conquering my city-states is the worst thing you could do to me.
Just 6 more turns for the friendship to wear off and I'll finally be able to liberate my city-state friends.

Also I still can't believe he managed to squeeze an army through the mountain lake and was successfully able to take Hatussa.
Also here's a screenshot I guess.

Oh, and also Nazca lines are awesome, they make flat desert tiles actually useful. Basically they buff all the adjacent tiles with food and faith.

Chosen Phoenicia, all random including map. Got continents. Deity, level 2 disasters. Really wanted to just feel out the game and wasn't sure what victory I was going for in the first 80 turns or so. Eventually went with peaceful/diplomatic. I have a self-imposed no trade initiation rule (I will accept trades offered though) so getting diplomatic points was actually a bit difficult (though on deity the AI refuses to trade them in later stages anyway). Early on though AI is eager enough to trade them that early extra resources are a very valuable source of diplo-points. Later game there was a bit of frustration. I went overkill with my points for to win votes midgame and actually lost two different votes late game (its a 3 point swing, either +2 or -1), so my I didn't actually finish until turn 358. I'm guessing going forward this will be my least favorite victory type since there's aren't really ways to speed things up. If you miss a vote, you just have to sit and wait for 30 turns.

Really love the new upgrade system. We'll have to see when I try a military game, but its looking like really clever way to solve the "instant 7-8 knight" problem which just makes the game too easy.

Disasters level 2 was a bit mild, going straight to level 4 next game. Lost a few coastal districts but mainly the worst that happens is you just have pillaged tiles for a little while.
