Had any great sea warfare.. ever? I haven't. Never ever seen a AI sea unit that is actually guarding a sea passage..

What about you guys?

Mostly naval units involve a battleship attack land units ... I've had the AI do that to me a couple times but very rare! Appart from that, I've attacked AI sails before (sort of a naval battle I guess)

The way to see nice naval battles is to let AI civs to freely develop at Emperor level (the world should consist of many continents & islands). If you are lucky, at least 2 of them would be well-developed when the modern era starts. They will build A LOT of naval units and wage rather bloody naval wars.

Yup yup, I love doing that.. But it's always tricky finding the front seat view for your observing boats :P

I've had my fair share between the Mongols and Russians vs. me on several maps.

I thought it would be fun to nuke ships in the ocean.

I haven't seen much use of ships except to carry people. I sometimes use ironclads if I can't beat a well defended city (so many attacks per turn!) and I usually have one or two battleships in the modern era. Once the AI crused right up and blew my settlers away then disappeared into the ocean. Poor settlers were just railroading and didn't see it coming. I did play one game where the AI built a fleet of ships and every time I got close enough to see one, they attacked my triremes and sails, sinking them with all hands (full of ground units). That ticked me off, and I lost twenty-something units, but it only happened in one game all this time. Other games I seldom lose more than a single ship.

Ship to Ship battles is pretty rare for me. Early on I'm not going to risk a transport, and their ships tend to leave me alone too. Later on when you're usually ahead, it seems pointless to have your battleship attack their sail, if you win you just give them that extra shield for prdctn, and theres always the off chance that u'll lose.

Blockading their port cities can really hinder a civ. Blowing holes in any sails that attempt to leave.

i usually use a battleship to explore rest of the world, and a transport to full of Armour and mech inf's to start my conquest. If I know that it's going to be hard (eg one enemy civ left with dozens of cities) I will send a carrier with some nukes too, and capture the capital city and split the enemy empire... Theres not much use for ships except getting to land and blockading ports (what the Israelis like to do!)...

submarine came out of nowhere, killed my battleship

That sucks, epecially if you had no intelligence on the enemy civ's tech level and military capabilities...

Having a scout ship to map out the world is important, especially if you want to conquer other lands. I always use a battleship as it has good attack and you can shell primitive or weaker cities...
