Your rank in the tech race. How to tell?

Many times on this forum I read people saying that they are first, second or third on the techs research but I cannot find where the game tells me how well am I doing on research.

How can you tell you relative position from your adversaries, other then following which wonders they build or what kind of unit they have.

One way is to check the diplomacy screen. Along the bottom, click on technologies, and it will show what techs your rivals have (and will/will not trade).

If you are leading the tech race, the screen will not show any techs available for trade (because you should have them already). If they have something you don't, then it might be available for trade.

Note that just because a rival civ has a tech that you don't doesn't necessarily mean that you're behind in the tech race. Some techs have more than one research route.

Also, you may have passed over a useless tech in favour of something more significant (eg. early in game, there is little advantage to researching fishing if your civ is landlocked).
