How exactly does zone of control work?

I've noticed that there is no setting in the editor to control this. My questions are as follows:

1) Can ZOC fire kill a unit or is it treated as bombardment?

2) What is the percentage chance for a ZOC? Or is it based on attack/defense values

3) Are the odds better/worse/same for a Fortress ZOC over other ZOCs

4) Do Blitz units get a ZOC attack chance for each movement point

Also, feel free to add all the details of ZOC that I have not covered?

1- can't kill.
It's bombardment.
2-depends upon the bombardment of the unit.
3- same.
4- Din't understand exectly what did you mean...
They might be heart from ZOC more then once.

2 - what timberwolf says, except that for a ZOC units with no bombard use their attack value instead.

IIRC Cav get ZOC automatically, as do tanks.

4 - AFAIK Blitz may get a ZOC shot up to the number of movement points, but only 1 shot per unit passing by.

Supposedly, the chance of a unit attempting a ZOC attack is 50%. The attack is then resolved as a normal bombardment attack with a RoF of 1 (possibly substituting attack value for bombardment strength as anaeres says).

So, obviously then, placing high attack units in a Fortress will ensure the greatest number of hits.

What about Artillery? Will they do a ZOC in a fortress?

Also, is it one ZOC attack per fortress or a % chance for each unit in a fortress to get a ZOC attack?

It seems to me this the chance of a ZOC attempt is waaaay below 50%. (Or is scaled to difficulty. On Emperor enemy units can practically run circles around my fortressed and fast units with impunity.) I think you should get an automatic attempt, or a return to Civ2 style zones of control. There would be no reason to attack fortressed units otherwise, unless of course you made an absolutely ridiculous line of fortifacations.

I might make a test scenario if I feel bored some day, but 50% seem believeable to me.

I believe it's one per fortress and per unit. If you've got three units in a fortress, once they've made three attempts (hitting or not), you'd get no more attempts (excluding Blitz units). It's perhaps this capping of the number of attempts that makes Lord Beverage doubt it's 50%?

Arty does get to make ZOC attacks.

I've seen one unit hit quite a few units from a stack with it's ZoC before.... I think.

Yeah, only last night a single Cav took 2 shots out of 5 Cav passing by.

So, there is no "1-shot-per-unit" limit.

I will test this tonight since it is my question :) ... I'm going to set up one MA in a fortress and put 20 spearmen next to it where the only way to move is by the fortress... I'll let you know tomorrow.

BomberEscort, you know that ZOC means moving from one surrounding tile to another surrounding tile, not just next to them and away?

Yeah, I know... my description above was not very clear...

Just wanted to check before you did the test. :)
