    Galleys

If you use the arrow keys or the numeric keypad, you can indeed move them into a sea tile. I once lost three galleys in a row accidentally in one game (is anyone else having the problem of pressing a directional key once and getting two moves out of it?).

    Rebuffing the rebels

Another Desk - The difference was either one of two things. If the city is currently growing, it will wait until it grows to produce the settler. If the city is stagnating or starving, you get the message box asking if you want to abandon the city. Additionally, IIRC, at Warlord...

    About Winning Cities with Culture.

On the other hand, I had three cities with culture well over 100 surrounding an enemy city with a culture under 10. My civ's total culture was over 40,000, and that civ's total culture was under 100. All nine squares inside that city's borders would normally have been under my control with my...

    who else loves the music?

I got my Babylonian game to the modern era, and I loved the music.

    Upgrade bug (or not?)

Yep, that's the way it works. You cannot build the basic version of your unique unit, and the unit that would upgrade to the basic version cannot be upgraded to your unique unit. You can upgrade unique units though, just not *to* unique units.

    Tech tree symbol question

Same answer for both questions. The techs with the crossed out circle are the ones you do not have to research to progress to the next age.

Real Unit and Terrain Data Compiled from Civilopedia

Did someone clear jungle? The resources are set at the beginning of the game, and I don't think they dissappear if you clear terrain. Clearing forest did not remove the furs for me.

Ok, I am getting creamed by the AI

I've been getting hit pretty hard as well, and it's been somewhat frustrating. Adding to it is the fact that I'm generally getting beaten pretty bad at Warlord even, and Chieftan is just too much of a step down. I have so many advantages I don't feel I'm learning much. I've really had to...

    Jungle Terrain is a pain

I'm not sure this is true. For example, furs appear only in forests and tundras, and in one game I had some on a forest, but when I cleared the forest, it was still there. Due to the way the editor works, it seems clear that the resources are determined at the start even though you can't see...

Issues that came up in midgame

Using an army is similar to using a single unit with triple hitpoints. For example, if you're attacking a foritified pikeman in a city with 3 swordsmen, you're using a 3 attack against 6 defense. You'll lose 2/3 of the rounds. If everyone's elite, you'll lose two of your swordsmen on average...

    News from the Front Lines

One thing I'm beginning to notice at least for me in terms of strategy changes is number of units. People are complaining about the governors wanting to build another pikeman in a city that already has three military units in it, but I'm beginning to wonder if the governor isn't on to something....

First longish game and some observations

You can never work beyond the standard 2 tile radius, and you can also never work squares outside your borders. Thus, the tiles you can work are limited until your culture expands your borders once, but when your culture forces your borders out to 3 or 4 tiles, you cannot work those squares.

Played for about 12 hrs. Got the story through 1200AD

From what I've read it's supposed to be random. It certainly didn't seem like it lasted 5 turns for me last night when I finally was able to switch from Despotism to Monarchy.

    Still playing my first game..

I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to here, but I'm not noticing anything missing from Civ I and II. You can adjust your percentages between income, research and luxuries on your domestic advisor (F1). It's at the top, just right of middle. Wealth is also available to convert shields...

borders & work-areas, can someone explain!

Your city starts out with a border radius of 1. This will expand to 2 once you get to 10 culture, and to 3 once you get to 100 culture, etc. Borders will also be influenced by other borders nearby, for example when two of your borders merge or your border conflicts with that of another...

    Military Unit Activation??

I also think I've single-clicked on a city and that has activated one or all of the garrisoning units.

    Governors must die

If you hit the G key on the city screen, it brings up a dialog that you can use to direct what the governor does. I've never seen the governor overriding my selections yet, but he does have his own recommendations when something's done. Don't know if you can disable the governor entirely.

Luxuries = WLTK! First Game Notes

You can still research Republic. I think there are navigation buttons on the bottom of the tech tree to go back to select a tech from a previous age to research, and I'm assuming it would still be on the drop down on the research complete dialog.

    Upgrade problem

Are you doing it in a city with a barracks? According to the manual, you can only upgrade units in cities with a barracks that have access to all of the resources the upgraded unit needs.
