Age of the Republic Scenario

isn't it C://Infogrames/civilization3/conquests/scenarios?

for some reason my computer wont let me quote replies so i'll have to group em:

@augurey - thanks

@overboost - this scenario isnt made for mp. theres too many civs (19) for it to be very compatible. plus it would suck cuz all the terraforming that the unincluded civs did would remain. you could change the owners of cities but the unit reordering you would have to do wouldnt be any fun. there'd be also a $hitload of other factors to consider too. and try gettn everybody to download the mod, good luck. simply put this game isnt made for mp.

@arcknight - is anybody else having this problem arcknight is having? seriously i'm all about resolving problems but i'm boggled. if you did everything exactly the way i said it should work. so i'm confused cuz the message you keep gettn is related to the scenario not being able to find the folders with the units in it. and that is an order era. make sure the folder "aotr" does not have another folder in it called "aotr", then the "art" and "text" folders. it should go right from "aotr" to "art" and "text" folders. if that doesnt do it man, i dont know. but you might have to write down the order all the files are in and post it up here so i can double check it.

@agent potato - mine says atari.

I've played this scenario as Rome and as Illyria (by chosing random). So far I am liking this more than many other scenarios I've played. Comparing this to RFRE, I would say this is better, especially with the new changes you've made regarding unit movement and HP.

I haven't played that far though. Currently I am at the year 249 BC. On the first turn I attacked Greece and Gaul after negotiating a Mutual Protection pact with Macedonia. I took Messana, Genua, Marsella, and Syracusae within a few turns as well as Verona, Altinum, Axima, Verunim (sp?), and Ovilava (sp?). Recently Illyria declared war against me and I took Scodra and Tergeste. Then I bargained with Gaul for peace and recieved Mindonissa (sp?), Vindobium, Rufiana, and some other little town.

From the get-go, Seleucia and Ptolemaic Egypt have had an alliance against me. This hadn't affected me until the Seleuciads took Altinum out of nowhere with several Light Cavalry II's. However, I took it back and fought a naval battle with them and I finally had made peace with them.

The AI makes too many alliances with and against people. Poor Macedonia is at war with Greece, Gaul, Iberia, Carthage, Numidia, Bithynia, Dacia, Thracia, Persia, Egypt, Media, Armenia and Illyria at the moment, and good thing I don't have a MP act with them anymore. They've done pretty well until recently when Gaul had took their top two cities, Meleusa and some other one.

Why this was kind of all out of the blue, but I'd thought I'd share whats going on.. I think this is a great scenario and I'm going to continue on with the Romans and then either try Carthage, Persia, or Egypt.

Ok am i suppsote to put the zipped file in there next to the biq right now i got the unzipped folder with art and text in it and the biq next to it in the scearios file.

you have one too many aotr folders it looks like to me if im seeing this right. move the art and text folders and stuff out of the inner one into the outer one and delete the inner one. should work fine then.

Thanks very much that was it. I love the art, i think that the calvery begins with to much speed tought and Planxes(sp.) are to weak. besides that it is Great.

Perhaps you could make the phalanxes slower but much more powerful on attack. After all they were the most formidable fighting force, granted that they were extremely vulnerable to flanking manuevers

@arcknight - glad you could get it workin finally. movement rates are so high to reflect more accurate troop movement. in all actuality they should be higher but i didnt want to stretch the scenario beyond the capabilities of turn-based combat. we're talkin bout lightly armed units on horseback. they should be at least twice as fast as your lightly armed foot unit.

@arcknight and agent potato - perhaps i should give phalanxes a bit more attack strength although i felt their major asset was as a defensive unit. i dont understand how you can say they are weak. they are the toughest unit defensively and no other defensive unit (besides garrison) can begin to hold a candle to them until the development of heavy infantry. my intention was never really to give any unit a huge defensive advantage over others but to make this a fast paced game where it is a battle to hold on to cities, where the best defense is a good offense.

Is this based on RomeTotal War by any chance? Seems pretty similar.

nope, never played rome total war. but if rome total war is set at the approximate same time as this game, it would only make sense for the same nations to be included with the same approximate territory. if the uu's are similar to actual units in the rome total war game thats a total coincadence. if ur talking bout the use of light and heavy infantry and cavalry, i snagged that idea off a game called imperial conquest. and it made more sense historically to have lightly and heavily armored foot and mounted units. the more elite armies had units with breastplates, early chain mail, etc. the cheaper armies tended to have huge numbers of unarmored units with whatever arms they could scavenge. it was not until they massacred a heavily armored outfit or army that they would get armor as armor was pretty expensive to outfit an entire army. if i could set the per turn cost higher i would. tiremes and catapult costs would definitely be increased.

I have Rome Total War so if you need UU's for any nation let me know. Theres plenty to choose from.

Rome Total War really is great, especially with the Total Realism mod.

I was playing a game earlier this week and noticed two things I would change.

1) The country you have as Bithnyia I would change to Pontus. It really is the two of them combined, but Pontus was much more influential at the time.

2) I would have cities retain their culture on capture. I guess thats more of a personal choice, but the original Rise of Rome scenario had it too.

@silver - it would be pretty sweet to have a list of all the nations elite units to better understand what kind of uu's i should be creating for each nation. i did a bunch of research on this but to no avail. everytime i'd search for "bithynia AND military" all i'd get it some stuff bout the roman military conquest of bithynia/pontus. stupid romans and their fame.

@gunner - maybe next time i'll split pontus and bithynia into two nations. as far as the retention of culture, i'd like to think over 290 years (the length of this scenario) that thered be some migration. the macedonian greeks (under alexander) and romans were known for repopulating their recently acquired territories. go ahead and change it if you want, its real easy. in fact feel free to change anything you want in this scenario.

woah... preciate the input there, silver. thats not gonna be a snap to create that many units. i would very much like to tho. but for now i must say that i am not working on a new version of aotr just yet. right now i lack the sufficient hard drive space (ancient computer, plus the age old dilemma of mp3s vs. programs). until i figure out how to get a 2nd hard drive to work, i wont have civ3 installed. so for now i must say its a project still on the drawing boards.

Hey, what a fun scenario!!! :goodjob:

I'm trying it with the Romans and enjoying myself. Here are some comments:

- So far (after 20 turns) the game goes fast (fast interturns)! :D

- I wasn't used to such high movement points!!! I lost a few unescorted catapults and workers in the North of Italy 'cause of it. So I've built a mini-Andrian's wall in the North of Italy to prevent that from happening!!!

- I've only attacked Greece so far, making an MA with Macedonia. I have been attacked (incentivated by Greece) by a few nations: Dacia, Thracia, Galatia, Illyria & someone else I can't remember. Chartage is a good friend! Who would say?

- The worker costs more than the Garisson. Why not make the worker cheaper but it's actions (roads, mines, etc) take longer? You eventually get some workers and all the terrains are (too) quickly developed. I propose to make the worker actions much longer in order to have slower land development.

- I understand you not wanting the overall city layout to be changed, but why not allow a limited number of Settlers? For instance, you could make the Palace auto-produce settlers (every 10 turns?). This would allow slow growth, but still ability to build new cities.

- The pirate boat has a strange attack, as it launches it's fire opposite to the enemy! It might need a "rotate before attack" option or similar.

Question:
- What are the UU's that sets off the GA?

-still need uu's for the following: bithynia, galatia, armenia, media, seleucia, and ptolemaic empires

May I make a suggestion, although it may seem like a shortcut. The Galatians were technically Celts, because Galatia was originally settled during Hellenistic times by Celtic mercenaries at the express invitation of a Seleucid (as I recall) monarch. Although, I don't know if the Celtic settlers became Hellenized very quickly (I doubt it ), you could probably get away with using Celtic warriors for Galatia. Twould make for interesting battles in Asia Minor.
